Carol Burnett got her start in off-Broadway theatre, first achieved national attention with a novelty tune entitled "I Made A Fool Of Myself Over John Foster Dulles" (Eisenhower's prim Secretary of State - don't ask), then made her way to television via appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show.
Burnett's first regular series role was on a sitcom called 'Stanley' (Sept. 1956 - March 1957) - one of those early TV shows with a high-quality pedigree that failed to catch on.
Carol Burnett's last special in 1967 before starting her long-running variety series was the closest thing she had done to a straight-ahead variety show format since leaving the Garry Moore Show.

This show never jumped;it was one of my favorites in both its original run and the "Carol Burnett and Friends" half-hour syndicated format.I wish they'd put this series on DVD,along with the special "Sills and Burnett At The Met".

Superb show but the parts where the cast"lost it"were faked to entice the audience.I thought that was a little crummy and Carol does love to sue.

I never watched The Carol Burnett Show when I was growing up but in recent years I've been treated to reruns and found it to be quite good.
Ironically, when the Burnett Show cast had a televised reunion in 1991, not only was Korman present and Van Dyke absent, but they had the temerity to show a "Family" sketch in which Van Dyke played, and none of the returnees even acknowledged his presence in the sketch!
Carol Burnett is one of the true Queens of Comedy (unlike Roseanne) and it's a shame that today's market just doesn't appreciate her and Harvey and Tim and Vicki.
