  The Cars
The Cars were yet another late 70s band that responded to the bloat and pretension of overproduced studio rock with snappy tunes and stripped-down arrangements.
Blondie or the Talking Heads, the Cars had no particular message, and next to no interest in expanding beyond their synth-plus-guitar pop-rock sound; plus, lead singer Rick Ocasek has a thin voice that isn't particularly flexible or gripping.
The title track (their first Top Ten hit) is the only really good tune on the album, though "Cruiser" has a decent riff, "Think It Over" uses electronic percussion to sinister effect, and "Since You're Gone," also a significant hit, features amusing Dylanesque phrasing.

This album really could use some re-mastering (there is one available, a deluxe version from 1990 with an extra demo disc; there have, however, been many albums re-mastered originally released later with clearly audible results so that version does not cut it in my books).
The cars were one of the most popular pop/rock bands to grace the stage in their time...their music wasn't over the top, but at the same time some of their more emotional, heartfelt tracks were not near as sappy as the competition.
The first four Cars albums, all produced by Roy Thomas Baker and released in the space of four years, are a really solid body of work.

The FAST CARS captured the jangly powerpop sound of the time (1978) and place (Manchester) creating anthemic scrappy pop songs that drew on the early garage and bubblegum rock scenes the way The Jam did.

Consequently, Black Cars is definitively of the moment -- it's hard to imagine a record that sounds more 1985 than this.
Since Vannelli is a professional, he does make it work on occasion, most notably on the minor hit singles "Black Cars" and "Hurts to Be in Love." Yet, this is more noteworthy for what he attempted than what he achieved.
Consequently, Black Cars is primarily interesting as an artifact for '80s fanatics and as a transitional record in Vanelli's career.

The CARS were forced into the limelight and it was hard for them to embrace and it’s a wonder that the album was as successful, because the CARS time was widely demanded but the band still hesitated to give up their privacy.

The Cars - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Cars were a popular American New Wave band, fronted by Ric Ocasek, that emerged out of the early punk scene in the late 1970s.
The Cars were at the forefront in merging 1970s guitar-oriented rock with the new synth-oriented pop then becoming popular, and which would flower in the early 1980s.
On The Colbert Report The Cars are frequently mentioned, and Ric Ocasek is a recurring character.

Fast Cars collects previously unearthed vintage live recordings by the highly influential Buzzcocks.
From the fast 'n' nervy punk rock of "Breakdown" and "Fast Cars" to the sprawling "Moving Away From the Pulsebeat" and catchy classics in waiting like "Noise Annoys" and "What Do I Get?" (their greatest A-side), there is undeniable proof here that the Buzzcocks, just a couple of years on, were one of the greats.
Music as exciting as this transcends any packaging problems, though, and even after 25 years in the ground, Fast Cars is still a living, breathing, pogo-inducing document from one of the most important bands of the original punk era.

The album puts Ocasek back on familiar Cars terrain, partly because he was reunited with Greg Hawkes, but mainly because his trademark tension had come back with a vengeance.

When built in 1939, these 45000 series wood sheathed box cars were numbered in the 9480-9999 series and were of AAR standard design in all respects (4/5 Dreadnaught ends, rectangular panel roof, AAR underframe, etc.), except for their wood side sheathing.
My guess is that they didn't bother with the traditional diagonals as the original car's fishbelly center sill would be more than sufficiant for a light loads carried by a stock car.

The album tracks here are generally very good and the hits are generally great (especially “My Best Friend’s Girl,” “Just What I Needed,” and “You’re All I’ve Got Tonight”), though several of these songs are so overplayed on classic rock radio that I rarely listen to the album anymore.
In short, The Cars were a band in the best sense of the term, and though a few so-so songs keep Candy-O at a definite notch below below the debut, I probably listen to it more since its songs are less familiar.
First of all (and this is just a personal preference), almost every song on this album is overly familiar, and I prefer revisiting them among the less recognizable gems scattered throughout their discography.

Pianist Art Lande, fairly well known from a series of albums on ECM, here teams with reed player Mark Miller for an album of generally short, pastoral pieces that tend to have a bit more of an academic than jazz feeling.
Lande's style seems perched midway between Bill Evans and early 20th century impressionism (particularly Debussy), but, while his playing is almost always tonal, he is reluctant to commit to actual melodies, leaving the listener a bit frustrated.
Miller's soprano saxophone work is somewhat modeled after Steve Lacy, but without the master's bite or sardonic humor; his work on flute and alto is calm and clear (though on "Cars" he ventures into some cathartic free playing), but unremarkable.
