The Cassandra Crossing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Cassandra Crossing is a 1976 British motion picture starring Richard Harris, Ava Gardner, Sophia Loren, Martin Sheen, Burt Lancaster and Lee Strasberg.
The twist, however, is the line crosses a dangerously unsound steel arch bridge known as the Cassandra Crossing.
Chamberlain is very concerned about the risk of crossing such a bridge and soon infected passengers begin to recover from their sickness due to the pure oxygen being distributed through the length of the train.

The first hint that The Cassandra Crossing, despite its big-budget and international cast, is a cheesy actioner is evident when O.J. Simpson’s and Martin Sheen’s names appear early in the credits, immediately following Sophia Loren and Richard Harris.
Nevertheless, there he is, struggling to envelop the cinematic silliness of Cassandra Crossing with music that makes it seem somehow worth watching.
The Cassandra Crossing -- in which a train heads toward a doomed bridge while carrying a cast of disparate characters, one of whom carries a deadly plague virus -- contains vintage Goldsmith action music accompanied by inventive orchestration.

It is basically a cross between Outbreak and The Train.
As the authorities realise the potential consequences of the plague reaching the outside world, they seal the train and send it towards a "test centre" in Poland.
But in order to get there, the train must cross the treacherous Cassandra Crossing, a rickety bridge which has been closed since 1948.

The pair would later work together on Rambo: First Blood Part II and Leviathan in 1985 and 1989 respectively, although The Cassandra Crossing remains Goldsmith’s most interesting work for the director, while offering a number of robust previews of his action writing to come.
The darker string passages of The Cassandra Crossing share similarities with Goldsmith’s score for Michael Crichton’s Coma of two years later and help to form a body of work by Goldsmith during the 1970s that includes Logan’s Run, Capricorn One and Twilight’s Last Gleaming and is among the most interesting of his career.
Among the action-oriented cues on this Italian pressing of the original RCA release ‘Helicopter Rescue’ and ‘The Climber’ develop with further percussion, strings and woodwinds with a spiralling and enjoyable intensity to culminate in ‘Kaplan’s Death’ wherein the musical narrative reaches a complete and satisfying conclusion.

Jerry Goldsmith's collaborations with director George Pan Cosmatos may not have been on the greatest movies of all time (The Cassandra Crossing was the first, followed by Rambo II and Leviathan) but the composer's music is always interesting and rather more than the respective films deserved.
Pick of the bunch has to be this fantastic effort for Cosmatos's ridiculous 1976 disaster movie (in every sense of the word) in which passengers on board a train are exposed to a deadly disease and so cannot get off it again.
The Cassandra Crossing is a terrific score, one of the best examples of the composer's taut style of the day.

Chamberlain takes change of finding the infected terrorist but by then the other passengers are falling ill. Desperate to stop an epidemic (and no doubt to avoid taking the blame) the Colonel diverts the train to an old Nazi concentration camp for quarantine which means crossing a rickety old bridge called the Cassandra Crossing.
While the Colonel’s focus is on preventing an epidemic across Europe at whatever the cost, Chamberlain’s is on saving the lives of all on board.

It wasn't enough that I was lumbered with the obscenely deceptive Ocean's Eleven (hint: it's NOT about an eleven year old boy named Ocean), but now I discover even older films, circa 1976, have practiced the same fl arts.
The culprit this time is The Cassandra Crossing.
The title evokes images of a wistful young woman, going by the delightfully wistful name of Cassandra, wistfully traipsing her way through adolescence, until the fateful day she meets a vengeful scoundrel Count and is crossed, thusly giving us The Cassandra Crossing.

Throughout the film, the train has about 10 cars on it in total.
When the Cassandra bridge collapses at the end, at least a dozen cars fly off the broken end into the gorge, AND there are still many more carriages from the second class section (which would be longer anyway....) which Jonathan (Richard Harris) managed to uncouple and stop yards away from the collapsing bridge.
