The Cat Concerto - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Cat Concerto is a one-reel animated cartoon short subject in the Tom and Jerry series, produced in Technicolor and released to theatres on April 26, 1947 by Metro-Goldwyn Mayer.
Jerry, who has been asleep inside the piano, is annoyed, having been rudely awakened by the hammers and sits on top of the grand piano to conduct (intimidate) the Cat.

Concerto in G (Ravel) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Concerto in G is a piano concerto by Maurice Ravel composed in the period of 1929–1931.
The concerto's opening whip crack introduces the piece, which leads into accented jazz-inspired melodies, in part recalling the composer's American travels.
The first and last movements (Allegramente and Presto) are heavily imbued with exciting jazz melodies, while the beautiful, contemplative second movement (Adagio assai) represents the Impressionist Ravel at some of his very best.

The cat is actually called “Jasper” and has a distinctly more tabby appearance, while the mouse already has the features that we recognise as Jerry (in fact, he would be the character who, over the years, changed least).
I’ve personally never understood why the next cartoon, The Cat Concerto, went on to win an Academy Award (their fourth!) and become one of the most cherished cat and mouse shorts when it is a direct copy of the Bugs Bunny cartoon Rhapsody Rabbit, directed by Friz Freleng the year before.
With 1964’s The Cat Above And The Mouse Below, Jones invokes his taste for classical music when “Thomasino CattiCazzaza” attempts to sing the Rigoletto to a packed house, not realising that Jerry is trying to sleep beneath the stage (the cartoon also recalls the earlier 1949 WB short Long Haired Hare).

TOM AND JERRY'S GREATEST CHASES - DVD
There are infinite explanations for this, starting with the way we remember Bugs, Daffy, et al as imitable--any attempt to quote "Tom and Jerry" would quickly turn into a game of charades, as their stories are often told in pantomime.
I want to highlight a trio of gems from this collection, though all fourteen are worthy of at least one sitting: "The Cat Concerto", which won an Oscar, is brilliantly executed--the pair duke it out as Tom performs a concert, and the action manages to be vivid and graceful without ever leaving the piano.
Finally, "Zoot Cat" earns points for its Tex Avery-style sight gags, such as Tom twirling a yo-yo so that its string spells out "Hi babe" to the object of his affection.

The other shorts found on the disc are the beautiful Gershwinesque Mouse in Manhattan, the hilarious Zoot Cat, Salt Water Tabby, Kitty Foiled (which was a new one to me, and quite funny) and the only mildly amusing Jerry and the Lion.

Jerry knows he is a mouse, and knows his aim is to generally exist and subvert any of Tom's actions, and Tom knows he is a cat, whose sole function in life is to rid the house he guards of mice.
Essentially, only the most memorable episodes are included, such as The Cat Concerto, a hilarious episode featuring Tom as a concert pianist struggling to hit the right notes whilst simultaneously catching Jerry, who has made the piano his home.

So while the cartoons contain some extremely strong character animation by the likes of Irv Spence and Ray Patterson, I don't always get the sense that these are truly interesting characters, and without that, the appeal of one character smashing another character's teeth to pieces is somehow lessened.

The collection also displays the genius of Warner Bros. animator Friz Freleng, most notably in the sublimely funny "Tweety Pie" ('47), which finds the titular bird eluding Sylvester the Cat, who is called Tom here.
He's officially Sylvester -- and the star -- by the time of Freleng's "Birds Anonymous" ('57), a clever AA parody in which well-meaning feline friends intervene in Sylvester's ongoing quest to consume Tweety.
