Coarse `Cat in the Hat' is another case of Seuss abuse
At one point in ''The Cat in the Hat,'' the Cat, played by Mike Myers, is mistaken for a pinata by a group of children at a birthday party.
The big-screen ''Cat in the Hat'' trades all that for noise and coarseness, for a nightmarishly creepy Thing 1 and Thing 2, and for a forced hipness that stands in direct opposition to the timeless silliness of the book.

Cat In The Hat Movie review
The book of "The Cat in the Hat," after all, was deliberately limited: it used only 300 words, and was primarily designed to get young children to enjoy reading.
Here, the Cat is frantic and mostly not very funny, selling every point as heavily as possible -- until, that is, the moment when he bids goodbye to the kids.
We never know how the Cat was summoned, but we finally learn that his mission was to get the kids to find ways of having fun, and to change their behavior overall.

SPLICEDwire | "Dr. Seuss's The Cat in the Hat" movie review (2003) "The Cat in the Hat" review, Bo Welch, Mike Myers, ...
Insufferably inane plot padding dominates this feature film pillaging entitled "Dr. Seuss' The Cat in the Hat" (the incorrect punctuation is the studio's, not mine) -- a story that was, once upon a time, about a mysterious, mischievous, talking, rhyming giant feline who turned a rainy afternoon into kooky chaos for a couple of kids.
This "Cat" turns the kid's mom (a grotesquely cake-makeuped Kelly Preston) into an overworked career-woman cliché who is too stupid to see through the cheap facade of a weasely, kid-hating suitor (Alec Baldwin), thereby inventing a Hollywoody "villain" for the children to defeat.
But by the time "The Cat in the Hat" was half over, only one indelible visual was burned into my mind: a sad, Lorax-like cartoon of Geisel crying his eyes out.

Seuss' The Cat in the Hat isn't nearly as aggravating as Dr.
Everything else, from the shameless self-promotion (of the film's soundtrack CD and amusement park ride) to the jarring cameos (Clint Howard and the suddenly omnipresent Paris Hilton...without the bored look of sex in her eye this time) are awful enough for theatres to be mandated into distributing barf bags at the door.
