  THE CAVE
As they get deeper into the cave system, they soon realize -- from the human bones -- that they're not the first ones there, and that they're not alone, as it seems some previously undiscovered animal species is also down there.
Those scenes, other moments of peril and pretty much most of the film once the premise is established might be unsettling, suspenseful and/or scary to younger viewers and/or those with low tolerance levels for such material and mayhem (others may only find some or none of it that way).
If you're still concerned about the film and its appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home who may be interested in seeing it, we suggest that you take a closer look at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

The Cave (2005) - Channel 4 Film review
It's supposed to give the film some pathos and respect for the real world divers, but this lot are such a bunch of frat boys and meatheads it's hard to be sympathetic.
Still, once they're actually in the cave at least we're treated to some fabulous underwater visuals and strikingly shot scenes in real caverns and underground rivers (these are supplemented by sets and effects work).
The film is predictably shiny and glossy and is ably constructed by director Bruce Hunt, a veteran of the Australian advertising industry and a unit director on Dark City and The Matrix films, where he also worked with cinematographer Ross Emery.

This film hit theaters here in the US shortly after The Descent hit the big screen in the UK.
Especially since The Cave is mostly the work of the studio, while The Descent was a masterpiece in the genre.
Sadly, the film is full of flaws, lack of scares, and too much studio handy-work.

"Secret of the Cave" - Heartland Film Festival 2006
It was a reworking of the final scene of that film, where the outlaws, famously portrayed by Paul Newman and Robert Redford, are surrounded by Bolivian police and come out shooting, the film ending on a freeze-frame.
He said films like Raiders of the Lost Ark and Goonies were favorites of his as a child, and those adventures were inspirational for doing a film like Outlaw Trail.
Outlaw Trail and Secret of the Cave may show up in a theater or film festival near you, but regardless of what kind of distribution these independent films eventually get, look for them down the road on DVD when you’re looking for fun, mysterious, adventurous family films that the entire family can enjoy.

 Cave, The (2005): Reviews
Though The Cave really, really tries to be scary from as many directions as possible, it fails to hold much in reserve and never manages to build suspense.
The Cave is National Geographic mixed with Roger Corman, and by the end you'll probably be wishing you saw "Red Eye" instead.
Not only is the film dreadfully dull: every time something potentially exciting does occur, the scenes are so muddled and chaotic that it is impossible to make out what is happening.

BBC - Movies - review - The Cave Of The Yellow Dog
The Cave of The Yellow Dog is an engaging portrait of life in a Mongolian nomad family, set in the northwest province of Altai.
The film hinges on the conflict between sheep-tending father Urjindorj and his six year-old daughter Nansal, over a puppy she discovers in the wild.
The core story is a slender affair: Nansal is expected to get rid of her new pet in case it attacks the family's sheep and goats, but the dog then saves a human life.

 Journey Into Amazing Caves
Though the film and caving team tried their best to purge the icy shaft of icicles, they realized even the smallest of loose shards could prove dangerous, even deadly, if they plummeted hundreds of feet to the crew below.
As the film team used ice screws to secure their position, they heard another sharp snap as the block beneath them shifted a quarter-inch.
The primary "dry" cave location was actually flooded with one to four feet of water, making the use of lights very precarious.

The Cave movie review, In Film Australia
The Cave, a loud and obtuse sci-fi clunker about strange beasts attacking a crew of stranded researchers in – you guessed it – a gigantic cave network is a painfully nauseating experience that deserves to have its own paragraph inside a medical dictionary of preventable illnesses.
Local biologists believe the cave could be home to an undiscovered eco-system, so they hire a group of gung-ho American cave explorers to come and do the dirty work.
The Cave is one of those earnest, unselfconscious genre rehashes that might have been dubbed a ‘homage’ if only it weren’t so terminally bereft of merit and legitimacy.

This particular summer, she finds a stray dog in a cave and wants to adopt him, much to the chagrin of her father, who is afraid of the dog's possible affiliation to wolves.
This conflict between father and daughter reflects one of the strongest themes of the film: the broadening gap between generations as traditional nomadic life is confronted by modernization.
The perfect family film, "The Cave of the Yellow Dog" shows us that everyone deserves to find the elegance in the littlest details of their lives.

Cave of the Yellow Dog, The (2006): Reviews
The Cave of the Yellow Dog has an abundance of gentle humor, much of it provided by an adorably scruffy toddler, but there's also impressive strength and wisdom in the family's uncomplaining, shoulder-to-the-wheel approach to the world.
At times the film's Buddhist lessons feel a bit forced, but the naturalistic performances Davaa has coaxed from a real-life Mongolian family, and her intimate understanding of their culture and values, give this sensitive portrayal its heft.
The dog is cute, the children are adorable, and the earth and the sky seem to stretch on without limit in The Cave of the Yellow Dog.

Monsters, caves, thrill-seekers, scientists and claustrophobia are all the elements that make “The Cave” just another one of those old-fashioned “monster-mash” movies.
The film itself is basically “Alien” in the underground but even if we have seen it a dozen times before it can still be a lot of fun.
The film excels when it focuses on the elements and what it really feels like to be miles and miles below the earth.

Bresson shunned professional actors, believing that drama interfered with the depiction of spirituality, which was his entire purpose; he also avoided calling attention to his method of filming so that the real essence of his characters, their spiritual being, would surface as the strongest presence in the film.

TheMovieBoy Review - The Cave (2005)
From the performances to the writing to the cinematography to the special effects, "The Cave" is a rickety, ramshackle junk heap of a monster movie, the type that wouldn't even pass muster with die-hard viewers of the Sci-Fi Channel.
The film simply decides it is over, throws in a ridiculous "surprise" development in the last scene to rapturous audience snickering, and then cuts to end credits.
Easily one of the biggest monumental wastes of time to be had in the theater all year, "The Cave" marks the bottom of the barrel of a genre that doesn't require much to begin with.

THE CAVE - movie and film review
Thirty years later - for some reason - a team of crack divers follow in their footsteps only to discover that all is not well beneath the ruins of the old church that had collapsed and secured the original outfit underground.
Morris Chestnut plays a convincing, dark and moody leader of the second team, whilst Lena Heady should run a real scientific institute if this is the level of calm, assured candour she can bring to such an operation on the big screen.
However, the characters do tend to become a little one-dimensional after awhile, and it's left to some stunning photography and excellent CGI created monsters to carry the film along, all of which is well worth a visit to the cinema to enjoy in full.

 The Cave
Not a good film, let's not go crazy, but not a terrible one, either--and if you can get into the idea that what the picture's really doing is rewriting the vampire mythos in biological/parasitical terms, you might even have a good time of the Reign of Fire variety.
Undaunted, they proceed to be buried alive until, thirty years later (in non-Cold War Romania), a group of scientists--looking for a giant cave, I guess--discovers the same giant cave and, noting that a lot of it is underwater, call in some super-divers to, um, swim.
It makes a problem of the lone hero "Duke" archetype who saves society without the skills to also be a part of that society; The Cave is a little like Batman Begins in that regard: a protector from fear using fear as his weapon.

We are seeing more and more older films released on DVD for a pittance, like this one, "Clan of the Cave Bear", which I purchased for under $6US.
In the DVD commentary we learn that much of the design for this film came from watching a few crude videotapes that were actually made by the Cro-Magnons during that prehistoric period and were discovered, well-preserved, in far northern sub-freezing caves in the 1960s.
This is a common theme in many many films over the years, and is closely related to the popular "Pleasantville" of 1998.

The Cave - ComingSoon.net Movie Reviews
The Cave is a fairly bland modern creature film in the Alien vein that is ultimately unsatisfying to all but the most die-hard of monster fans.
Like most of these films, the characters are drawn from well-known archetypes: Jack is the experienced and strict leader, his brother Tyler (Eddie Cibrian) is the daredevil, throw the rules out the window type, etc. You know the drill.
The Cave is a decently crafted but unoriginal and uninspiring creature feature with a few moments of true entertainment that the rest of the film never matches up to.
