The Caves of Steel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Meanwhile, Earth is overpopulated (with a total population of 8 billion) and strict rules against robots have been passed.
The eponymous "caves of steel" are vast underground city complexes, capable of supporting tens of millions each.
In The Caves of Steel and its sequels, Asimov paints a grim situation of an Earth which has become pseudo-socialist to deal with an extremely large population, and of luxury-seeking Spacers who limit birth so that each may have great wealth and privacy.

Isaac Asimov: The Caves of Steel
The Caves of Steel (1954) is set three thousand years into the future.
Humans live on Earth in completely enclosed underground cities (caves of steel) while their robot servants work in mines and farms in the open country.
Like many of Asimov's other robot stories, Caves of Steel tries to banish the stereotype of the "evil robot." Asimov's robots are not something to be feared, and are not abominations of nature created by humans.

Aaron's Commentary Isaac Asimov - The Caves of Steel
His novel-length work is generally considered (including by Asimov himself) to have improved with The End of Eternity (1955), a time travel novel, and The Caves of Steel (1954) and The Naked Sun (1957), SF mystery novels that featured detective Lije Baley and his robot companion R. Daneel Olivaw.

 THE CAVES OF STEEL
In this respect, The Caves of Steel was the first full length novel by Asimov to explore this territory, itself spawning a sequence of further novels featuring the Baley/R.Daneel characters.
It seemed inevitable that one of these proved to be an ambitious adaptation of The Naked Sun, Asimov’s 1956 sequel to The Caves of Steel, adapted by Robert Muller and directed by Rudolph Cartier.
The script for The Caves of Steel was handled by Terry Nation, who at the time was riding high on the recent success of the Dr Who serial The Daleks, although Shubik had already been familiar with Nations work from his involvement with Out of this World.

Rotten Tomatoes Forums - I, Robot? Caves of Steel?
"The Caves of Steel" was a murder mystery in a domed New York of the future, where a human detective is partnered with a "humaniform robot" to solve a murder that may have been committed by a robot.
Still, if they do a good job, Caves of Steel should make a good movie, and they can always go back and do the short stories as a prequel.
From what I've read so far, it seems that "Caves" is the main inspiration for the screenplay.
