Topic: The Central Dogma

Central dogma of genetics - EvoWiki
The central dogma, which with a few rare but notable exceptions has been confirmed, proves that Evolution does not proceed in a teleological "directed" way, as proposed by Lamarck in the 19th century, and considered possible by many biologists before the 1950s (including Charles Darwin).
The most notable exception to the central dogma is reverse transcription, in which RNA encodes DNA.
Prions are another exception to the central dogma.

Central dogma of molecular biology - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The central dogma of molecular biology was first enunciated by Francis Crick in 1958 and re-stated in a Nature paper published in 1970.
The central dogma is often used as a reductionist research strategy that proceeds bottom up attempting to explain all biological phenomena in molecular terms.
Although they don't dispute the very specific reading of the central dogma, these researchers claim that a reductionist research strategy may limit the understanding of complex systems that cannot be analyzed by their molecular interactions alone because of the combinatorial complexity involved (Werner 2005).

Central dogma of molecular biology - Open Encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
The central dogma of molecular biology (sometimes Crick's central dogma after Francis Crick who coined the term and discovered some of the principles) states that the flow of genetic information is "DNA to RNA to protein".
The central dogma is not really a dogma in the traditional sense of the word, like all scientific theories it is modified as we learn more details of the processes.
The biggest revolution in the central dogma was the discovery of retroviruses, which transcribe RNA into DNA through the use of a special enzyme called reverse transcriptase has resulted in an exception to the central dogma; RNA->DNA->RNA->protein.

 Evolution: The Central Dogma
The paradigm of Molecular Biology is The Central Dogma.
The recently discovered "prions" indicates that there is in fact a mechanism for a type of protein replication, and this goes against the central dogma.
However, this central dogma of information flow is still upheld to some degree.

By any reasonable measure, the finding (published last February) signaled the downfall of the central dogma; it also destroyed the scientific foundation of genetic engineering, and the validity of the biotechnology industry's widely advertised claim that its methods of genetically modifying food crops are "specific, precise, and predictable" and therefore safe.
Alternative splicing is a startling departure from the orderly design of the central dogma, in which the distinctive nucleotide sequence of a single gene encodes the amino acid sequence of a single protein.
That the industry is guided by the central dogma was made explicit by Ralph W.F. Hardy, president of the National Agricultural Biotechnology Council and formerly director of life sciences at DuPont, a major producer of genetically engineered seeds.

Hello, I moved this to 'Central Dogma of Molecular Biology' because this is what Crick called it and this is what gets the most google hits.
:However, it does continue to be referred to as such (central dogma of molecular biology) amongst biologists (at least from my limited experience).
I have never heard it called the central dogma of genetics (and I don't think it really is genetics, since RNA->Protein is largely outside the domain of genetics, but this is not really relevant to what we should call the article).

 Central Dogma of Molecular Biology
The central dogma was put forward [4] at a period when much of what we now know in molecular genetics was not established.
Because it was abundantly clear by that time that a protein had a well defined three dimensional structure, and that its activity depended crucially on this structure, it was necessary to put the folding-up process on one side, and postulate that, by and large, the polypeptide chain folded itself up.
Because these were all the possible transfers from protein, the central dogma could be stated in the form "once (sequential) information has passed into protein it cannot get out again" [4].

The Central Dogma bamboozles us into believing that to solve the so-called measurement problem “means to design an interpretation in which measurement processes are not different in principle from ordinary physical interactions,” as an anonymous referee once put to me.  ABLE: Pollen Tube Formation and the Central Dogma of Biology
The concepts which describe how information stored in the DNA is used in the cell have become known collectively as the "central dogma" of biology (it should be noted that while these concepts are certainly "central" to the study of biology, the term "dogma" is a bit pretentious.
In fact one of the tenets of the "central dogma," that RNA is copied from DNA and not the other way around, was shown to be less than universal with the discovery of RNA viruses).
All of these processes taken together are often referred to as the "central dogma" of biology, which can be summarized diagrammatically as shown in Figure 9.1.

 Re: Prion and Central Dogma
One of the beauties of science is that quite often what is considered absolute fact turns out to be not much more than a good suggestion, waiting to modified or even disproven.
The Central Dogma (which somebody has made a picture of here) is one of those rules that has had to be modified in recent years, mainly because the dicovery of infectious diseases (such as viruses and prions) that appear to violate it.
It also appears that prions are found not only in cattle and humans, but also in simple organisms such as yeast, where they might even be advantageous to the yeast rather than disease causing.

Critical Genetics -- Barry Commoner - The Real Central Dogma
The Sequence Hypothesis is neatly symbolized by a straight line with arrows depicting the flow of genetic information from DNA to RNA and from RNA to protein, where, according to the Central Dogma, it stops.
Clearly, Crick's second hypothesis, the Central Dogma proper, is crucial to the explanatory power of the theory of molecular genetics.
But their assertion that Crick's theory "had nothing to do with the relationship between an organism's genome and its inherited traits" is also an astonishing misstatement of historical fact.
