§10. "Scribner’s Monthly; The Century Magazine". XIX. Later Magazines. Vol. 17. Later National Literature, ...
While Harper’s Magazine may well claim to be the pioneer among high-class illustrated magazines in America, it was not spurred to its greatest exertions until the appearance of Scribner’s Monthly in 1870.
The rivalry between these two magazines, and later the triangular rivalry engaged in by Harper’s, the Century, and Scribner’s Magazine, has led to great improvements in the art of engraving and in the technique of printing illustrations.
Holland was to have continued in the editorship, but before the appearance of the first issue of the Century he died and was succeeded by Richard Watson Gilder, who from the first had been associate editor.

Like Harper’s Magazine it is closely associated with a great publishing house, but unlike Harper’s in the early years it was never a mere “tender to the business.” Though announced by a rather conventional prospectus it began auspiciously.
It is not easy to characterize the distinctions between Harper’s Magazine, the Century and Scribner’s Magazine as these have existed for the last thirty years.
It was for Harper’s Magazine and Scribner’s Monthly to show that pictures in the text were not incompatible with literary dignity and excellence; and they did this by securing the best available literary material, and developing illustrations that were not unworthy to accompany it.

But go back a century and a half and you find an American economy in which there were literally none.
The American machine-tool industry was to the second half of the 19th century what the computer and networking industry was to the second half of the 20th: the country's most important driver of technological innovation.
The machinists of the Franklin Institute, and their colleagues in cities like Cincinnati and Providence, Rhode Island, built lathes and planers and drills and screw cutters so that other companies could build rifles and clocks and sewing machines.

It is, therefore, perhaps possible that the legends, current in the ninth and committed to writing in the eleventh century, have for foundation an actual sea-voyage the destination of which cannot however be determined.
Thus it is put among the Canary Islands on the Herford chart of the world (beginning of the fourteenth century); it is substituted for the island of Madeira on the chart of the Pizzigani (1367), on the Weimar chart (1424), and on the chart of Beccario (1435).
At the end of the sixteenth century the failure to find the island led the cartographers Apianus and Ortelius to place it once more in the ocean west of Ireland; finally, in the early part of the nineteenth century belief in the existence of the island was completely abandoned.

GSB | Chicago: Events of the Century
I would say the most significant event of the 20th century was the assassination by Serbian nationalists in June 1914 of the heir to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian empire, Archduke Ferdinand, on that bridge in Sarajevo.
It can be argued that the failures of the 20th century stemmed from the inability of the established powers to manage the emergence of those states with aspirations to great power status, notably Germany and Japan.
Significant events of the next century will be the continued “graying” of populations in developed countries with the ensuing political and economic repercussions and the end of big government as we have known it in this century.

CAMERA: Christian Century Magazine Allows Wall Error
One might think the bi-weekly magazine’s readiness to correct this (rather inconsequential) error proves its adherence to the journalistic standards agreed upon by the American media.
But the Christian Century’s refusal to correct another, much more substantial factual error reveals that–at least when it comes to Israel–the magazine’s editors are not so concerned with factual accuracy.
An editor explained that the decision not to correct was based solely on the columnist's insistence that he "stands by his observation" on the purorted path of the barrier.

Then, as now, the higher clergy seemed to be completely unaware of the damage that scandalous sexual behavior was causing to both the victims and the community as a whole.
The laity had granted the clergy temporal authority and wealth; so when the clergy failed in their spiritual mission, it was the laity that had the duty to take these things back, in collaboration with reformers in the clergy and religious orders.
Their inclusion by him in the process of reforming even the highest members of the clergy illustrates Damian’s view that all in the church have the duty to correct their “superiors” publicly when they see serious sin or deviations from tradition.
