tvdvdreviews.com -- The Singing Detective DVD Review
The 1986 BBC miniseries The Singing Detective is a brilliantly hypnotic masterpiece of human redemption presented as a pastiche of film noir, medical drama, and lush musical.
Marlow is a writer of cheap detective novels, an occupation he feels was almost preordained by his given name.
The Singing Detective is not dealt with in much detail here, but the program does give insight into Potter's personality and the relationship between his life and his work.

 The Singing Detective (2003)
Plot: Dan Dark, a writer of cheap detective novels, is hospitalized with an extreme case of psoriasis, which has crippled his joints and left his body covered with sores.
However Dark suspects that she and her lover, the villainous Mark Binney, who also appears as a character in the detective world and his childhood memories, are trying to steal the screenplay and sell it themselves.
Here the detective tale is just a handful of scenes with no narrative thread, whereas in the series they had their own entire story.

The hard-boiled detective theorizes aloud that the young man delivered pizzas to the dead man. Eventually, he was corrupted by big tips and moved in with the guy.
The detective is a firm believer in the old fallacy that all gays are rich, and he deeply resents people with money.
Gradually, the detective slowly steers the conversation toward a revelation about the rather lurid underbelly of his own existence, and Ayun Fedorcha’s lighting becomes less naturalistic and more intensely dramatic.

The search for fl holes has a lot in common with reading cheap detective novels — you run into a lot of circumstantial evidence, smoking guns, and mysterious strangers speaking in unusual languages.
But, reading cheap detective novels can be fun, and so can looking for fl holes.

Spoofing the entire 1940s detective genre, and his own performances as a bumbling private detective, Peter Falk plays Lou Pekinpaugh, a San Francisco private detective accused of murdering his partner at the instigation of his mistress, the partner's wife, Georgia Merkle (Marsha Mason).
Police Lieutenant DiMaggio (Vic Tayback) has his eye on Lou and blunders around in a way which complicates Lou's efforts to clear his name.
In this madcap comedy written by Neil Simon, obstacles and complications appear every few minutes, and a great many famous actors show up in hilarious cameos.

It was a daring (and some might say foolhardy) assignment to film Dennis Potter's screenplay, written out of Potter's desire to see his semi-autobiographical drama in feature-length form, but Gordon rose to the occasion with a superlative cast led by Robert Downey Jr, intense as ever as Potter's on-screen alter ego.
While many critics called this a noble failure, The Singing Detective captures the essence of Potter's story, offering a welcome alternative to the acknowledged superiority of the miniseries.
This is a reasonable attempt to recreate Potter's dystopia cubed, with a reasonable performance from enfant terrible, Downey Jun. However, while I believe that this film is based on a new, revised script by Dennis Potter, it is, in my view, a rather crude alternative to the BBC original.

It's a camp parody of Humphrey Bogart's 1940s detective flicks (particularly The Maltese Falcon and The Big Sleep), with a big dose of Casablanca thrown in for good measure.
Unfortunately, it's not Neil Simon's best work--he's better at character comedy such as The Odd Couple and The Goodbye Girl than this kind of slapstick--but there are a few good lines and the cast gives it their best.
Peter Falk does an impressive Bogart impersonation as gumshoe Lou Peckenpah throughout "The Cheap Detective," doing such a fine job that you'll never confuse Lou with Lieutenant Columbo.

The Cheap Detective, which might also be called Son of Casablanca, is a hilarious and loving takeoff on all 1940s Warner Bros private eye and foreign intrigue mellers.

Essentially picking up where he left off with his Sam Spade send-up of Murder by Death, Peter Falk steps into the gumshoes of Lou Peckinpaugh, a private eye plying his trade in the "fictional" city of San Francisco in the days when WWII was just a-looming.
Lou is faced with the daunting tasks of tying up all the plot threads and choosing which of the several femme fatales that he'll walk off into the sunset with.
A few years before the Zucker/Abrahams/Zucker team got to establish their precept that genre spoofs work better with players that aren't typed to comic roles, The Cheap Detective offers similar evidence through the surprisingly funny contributions of Lamas and his befuddled take on Paul Henreid.

Neither the first nor the last lampoon of Casablanca and The Maltese Falcon, The Cheap Detective is Neil Simon's take on Bogart-mania, with Peter Falk in the title role and a confusing array of plots and cameo performers surrounding him.
None of the episodes are as strong as the best ones appearing in the previous set, but all have engaging guest stars and memorable situations.
As a reprise for the uninitiated: Falk’s Columbo is a slovenly-looking murder detective who wears down his opponents' cleverness with determination and clear thinking.

dOc DVD Review: The Cheap Detective (1978)
Two years before the Zucker brothers released their box-office hit, Neil Simon and director Robert Moore created The Cheap Detective, an amusing take-off on the film noir boom of the 1940s.
Much of it works, but he also seems to willing to go for the cheap sex joke, and some of the physical comedy feels a bit staged.
The Cheap Detective will be funniest for those who have at least a tenuous grasp of the source material, but Simon's wordplay is sharp enough that even the uninitiated will find something to enjoy.

That film had the same writer, same producer, same director, even some of the same cast as Detective.
Most important, the two movies share the notion that a charming pastiche of a beloved popular cultural form can turn a tidy profit in the nostalgia market.

This is one of those books that you wish had been written back when Groucho could have played the lead himself or that some enterprising person working for Mystery (on PBS) would turn into one of their series as a change of pace from their more serious fare.
Ron Goulart's amusing (what would you expect with a Marx brother?) fictional accounting of a zany murder chase is not so farsical as it seems.
"Groucho Marx, Master Detective" is not a compelling mystery in which you try to figure out the clues one step ahead of the sleuth, but it is fun to have Groucho alive and kicking.
