The Chordettes were one of the more popular white female groups of the ‘50s, but unlike most of their counterparts who needed record successes to get into TV and radio, they established themselves over the air and on the small screen years before ever cutting their first record.
It was during this drought that The Chordettes decided to take the rout of other white pop artists on the early ‘50s: when all else failed, cover a fl artist’s song and ride it up the chart.
But The Chordettes accomplishments were enviable (14 chart records and four top 10s in 22 releases) and their professionalism and attraction were undeniable.

The Chordettes were one of the longest-lived vocal groups with roots in the mainstream pop and vocal harmonies of the 1940s and early 1950s.
The Chordettes were among the White pop acts that covered rock and R&B songs in the mid-1950s for the pop market, as early rock'n'roll began its successful threat to take over the mainstream audience.
In the late 1950s and early 1960s, the Chordettes continued to alternate between pop songs and ones with an eye on the rock market, including covers of the Coasters' "Charlie Brown," Paul Anka's "Lonely Boy," and Dodie Stevens' "Pink Shoelaces." They even did some recordings with King Curtis on sax.

The Chordettes : The Best of the Chordettes - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
The Chordettes are beloved because they patterned themselves after male groups; their lineup included a bass and a baritone singer, unusual for a female group, and Jinny Osborn's affable leads.
The Chordettes' harmonies are enthralling; each member carried her weight (nobody was there for decoration), performing their respective parts to perfection and making the whole group bombastic.
Among the 18 tracks are their big hit, "Sandman," and covers of the Teen Queens' "Eddie My Love" and Ronald & Ruby's "Lollipop." As delightful as these studio recordings are, the Chordettes were more so live; nothing's more pleasing then witnessing a female group on-stage blowing out harmony parts like their male counterparts.
