The Second Chronicles of Amber (books 6-10) are not as good as the first, however what was achieved in books 1-5 is hard to beat.
The second Amber Chronicles are not as good as the first, but still a very, very good fantasy read.
In quality somewhere between Dragonlance Chronicles, which I thought was clumsily written with shallow characterization and too much shifting of viewpoint, and the Riftwar Saga, which was excellent.

This quest consumes the first five books of the "Complete Chronicles of Amber," and a rousing tale it is. Corwin has supernatural powers, but he is not the cardboard, two dimensional hero so often encountered in "Sword and Sorcery" fiction.
Zelazny's use of first-person narrative in the beginning of the series helps the reader discover the intricacies of Amber along with the main character, something that is rarely done well, and definately not as well as Zelazny does here.

In line with previous Amber books, it ends in a total cliffhanger that I'd have hated, were I not already an Amber fan.
While there may be enough explanations in the book to get you by, it would be a much better read after the first book, which sets up the situation well and builds the tension even better.
The books have the "flavor" of Amber and several times, I nodded knowingly at the end of a scene, the memory of past scenes apparent in my mind.
