Linden does, reluctantly, and finds that Covenant's estranged wife has returned to him, but that she is under the influence of a cult of worshippers of Lord Foul, who has found a way to exert his influence in Covenant's world.
Covenant sets out to fashion a new Staff of Law; his party is strengthened by a group of Haruchai, the descendants of the race which formerly served the Land as the Bloodguard.

As these are the second chronicles I would strongly recommend to read the "First Chronicles of Thomas Convenant" first.
If this statement was generally the case, the "Thomas Covenant", is the grown up version, the adult treatment and a natural progression from those two series.
There a useful comparisons to be made between Lord of the Rings and Thomas Covenant, though TC doesn't have the wealth of lore and the rich history of LOTR.

Thomas Covenant is not just the first, but also the best anti-hero (perhaps Unhero would be more fitting) I have ever encountered.
The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant struck me as a kind of chrome plated, shallow American pastiche of a fantasy world created for the money as opposed to any real artistic drive.
However I felt that as a cornerstone event, fundamental to the entire structure of the saga and to the construction of Covenant's character it was brilliant.

As an anti-hero Thomas Covenant is definately a success--there is no cliched acceptance of the need of the land and a wholehearted assumption of the burden of the hero.
Covenant wants nothing more than to preserve his sanity (constantly endangered by the dream of The Land and its healing powers--"nerves don't regenerate" is his mantra) and escape back to reality, no matter how hellish it is.

It may have had something to do with the fact the the main character, Thomas Covenant, died in the final book of "The Second Chronicles of Thomas Covenant".
It's been years since I'd read the original "The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever" and the follow-ups; even then, I had read them in the library, so I didn't have the originals to fall back on.
It has been ten years since Linden Avery, the Chosen and companion to Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever, returned from the Land after the defeat of Lord Foul the Depiser and the death of Covenant.

Donaldson could have written books on the MINOR characters in his stories because they were all so intermingled in the plot that they all had huge pieces of history that he was able to tie into every situation.
