In The Chrysalids, the friendship between the children David and Sophie, forged upon his discovery of the sixth toe that would doom her if publicly revealed, is both subtle and real.
And there's one marvelous, haunting scene that lodges in the memory: a mother's futile pleas for her baby, whose mutation is described only as "such a little thing," and which is never revealed to either David or the reader.
The Chrysalids grows downright unnerving in its final sections, when the rescuers from New Zealand not only massacre David's pursuers in a truly unnerving use of superior technology, but then spend a couple of pages explaining at length why this was just another justified example of evolution in action.

The Chrysalids tells the story of an isolated remnant of human civilisation struggling to rebuild in a world that was devastated (by thermonuclear war - although he never says this directly it is clear from the effects he describes).
The Chrysalids is no exception: interesting characters with a bit of depth, a desperate situation calling for desperate measures, and all adding up to a good read.
Unusually for Wyndham 'The Chrysalids' is set not in Wyndham's usual UK rural setting of the Nineteen Fifties, but in an apocalyptic Labrador of the far future.

They have emerged from the chaos of an after-the-holocaust world and have reached a stage of organized community life, farmlands, and a strict and stern inflexible morality based on a dark, incomprehensible fear of an unknown past.
The word "chrysalid" is a scientific term meaning the state into which the larvae of most insects pass before becoming adults.
Thus, as with all good titles, the reader of The Chrysalids is left to extend this definition so as to apply it in an appropriate way to the novel itself.

Then David discovers rather forcefully that his younger sister Petra too is "different." A series of events soon finds David, Petra and others like them forced to flee for their very lives from the community that once nurtured but now reviles them.
After all if it was just a simple tale why was it assigned reading, and why was it as likely to found in the literature section as the science fiction section of a book store or library.
The Chrysalids is in reality a study in prejudice, and acceptance in society.

The title “The Chrysalids” signifies that it is a novel about change.
The word “chrysalid” is related to the word “chrysalis”, which means “the form which butterflies, moths, and most other insects assume when they change from the state of larva or caterpillar and before they arrive at their winged or perfect state”.
Or in simpler terms, it is the state where the caterpillar does most, if not all, of its change into a butterfly.
