Watershed Online: Review of the The Chumscrubber
We could be the aimless, the driven, the druggie, the utopian, the status-seeker, the seductress, the thoughtful one, the appeasing one or the one who just couldn't handle it anymore and ends it all with a rope.
The Chumscrubber is set in a pristine neighbourhood where yards are perfectly manicured, smiles pasted on just so and lives are programmed for success and happiness.
Despite the stories of self-annihilation we continue to tell and live by, where the hope came for us was that the Suffering One who is willing to stand on a hill, to be hung from a cross and survey the state of our souls, never turns away or averts his glance.

James Sanford reviews The Chumscrubber   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
The title doesn't offer much of an indication what "The Chumscrubber" is about; frankly, after 107 minutes of watching it, you may still be wondering.
The "Chumscrubber" of the title is a bloodthirsty video game hero who roams through an apocalyptic world, fighting ghouls.
"Chumscrubber" would have been a more fulfilling film if it had found a way to connect some of its more intriguing characters, such as Allison Janney's edgy vitamin-pushing housewife or the sad-eyed mother played by Carrie-Anne Moss, who has Post-It notes full of affirmations adorning her mirror.

 The Chumscrubber
That is part of the premise of The Chumscrubber, a satirical look at children and adults that is a mish-mash of potentially interesting but partially developed ideas wrapped around a horrible name for a movie.
The Chumscrubber is a video game, one of those violent ones that parents rail against.
For Posin and Stanford, the community in The Chumscrubber was the ultimate suburban nightmare.

The Seattle Times: Movies: "Chumscrubber": Fine cast, pacing show director's potential despite stale story
Never mind Tolstoy — all unhappy families are alike in Arie Posin's suburban-angst drama "The Chumscrubber." Set in the sort of middle-of-nowhere planned community that could be anywhere, the families in this film are staffed with ambitious, well-meaning but neglectful parents, all blind to the problems suffered by their anxiety-ridden offspring.
And Jamie Bell (the now-grown-up hero of "Billy Elliot"), as the central character, is screwed down as tightly as the cap on a pill bottle; in keeping his character's misery carefully contained, he makes it all the more poignant.
Watch "The Chumscrubber" for its cast, if for no other reason — but keep an eye on Posin, now that he's got suburbia out of his system.

 Chumscrubber, The (2005): Reviews
Richly layered and thematically provocative, The Chumscrubber renders a portrait of the fractured and fractious quality of life in American suburbia with crystalline precision.
An insufferable, self-conscious cult movie, The Chumscrubber smugly heaps on half-baked ideas about media violence, the homogeneity of suburbia and the disintegration of the American family.
Yes, it is spotty, yes, the dialogue is corny, yes, the whole "chumscrubber" concept is painfully underdeveloped and embarassingly misused, but you have to look a bit deeper.

'Chumscrubber' - MOVIE REVIEW - Los Angeles Times - calendarlive.com
In "The Chumscrubber," Dean Stiffle (Jamie Bell) walks into his friend Troy Johnson's (Josh Janowicz) room during one of his mother's parties to find that he's hanged himself.
At first glance, Arie Posin's debut film, from a screenplay by Zac Stanford, could be mistaken for the secret love child of "Donnie Darko" and "Desperate Housewives." Part caustic satire of boomer parenting, part teen melodrama, part indictment of exurban living, "The Chumscrubber" is easily classifiable as juvenilia despite the age of its director.
"The Chumscrubber" may not be the definitive movie on the subject (Gus Van Sant's "Elephant" comes much closer), but it ultimately succeeds in capturing an adolescent recoil from American life at its most artificial and alienating that rings true, and not entirely unjustified.

 The Chumscrubber (2005)
The Chumscrubber is yet another movie in which its young characters seem to be the only ones remotely aware - the adults are so petty and caught up in their own lives that they don't realize when their children are in trouble.
Dean's psychiatrist father prescribes him the very same medication to which he is already addicted; Rita Wilson's Terri Bratley is so concerned with her oncoming marriage to the Mayor that she fails to notice her child has been kidnapped; Mr.
The Chumscrubber takes advantage of such devices to stab you in the gut with its message warning against artificial suburbia and the apathy and destruction it can breed with its disregard.

 The Chumscrubber at Laemmle Theatres
Shakespeare contended that comedies end in weddings and tragedies end in funerals: in a perfect expression of The Chumscrubber's tricky tonal highwire act—a razor's edge balance of comedy and drama—this remarkably assured debut has the good grace and audacity to end with both, occurring simultaneously, on a perfectly manicured cul-de-sac.
The Chumscrubber is directed by Arie Posin and written by Zac Stanford.
And everywhere there is "The Chumscrubber." A totemic pop culture presence that prowls his own post-apocalyptic landscape peopled with subhuman demons and freaks, the ubiquitous "Chumscrubber" bubbles up in television cartoons, in violent video games, on posters and T-shirts and stickers and rearview mirrors as.

 Filmtracks: The Chumscrubber (James Horner)
The Chumscrubber: (James Horner) Black comedies about the pitfalls of American suburban life for the teenage crowd have experienced a renaissance in the last ten years, aided by the immensely popular mainstream hit, American Beauty.
The most awkward cue is "Parental Rift/The Chumscrubber," the latter of which demands a lengthy, chaotic theme for electric guitar, heavy bass rhythms, and a wickedly perverse attitude.
But the comedic rhythms are handled with a far sharper touch by other composers, and you have to wonder if something a little more dense (even in the same instrumentation) would have given the score a more believable intensity.

 Review: The Chumscrubber
The Chumscrubber assembles such an amazing collection of actors that their mishandling by novice director Arie Posin is unforgivable.
The filmmaker’s disorganized commentary on the ignorance of suburban parents packs on the subplots and supporting characters as if it were combining multiple scripts rather than weaving relative stories.
Mostly alternating between serious observational drama and ludicrous fl comedy, The Chumscrubber at times is a surreal farce, a quirky sitcom or a tragic parable.

 SoundtrackNet : The Chumscrubber Soundtrack
Released by Newmarket Films, the film cost under $7 million to make, and yet they were able to call upon the services of James Horner to provide them with a rather unique and compelling score.
The soundtrack to The Chumscrubber starts out with a few songs, all of which have the same dreary almost dream-like quality that seems to be the "standard" for indie films about teenage angst.
While certainly there might be some stylistic overlap with the aforementioned composers and this Horner score, the fact remains that this score totally took me by surprise, and has the distinct possibility of sneaking up behind the other "expected" contenders for a coveted spot in SoundtrackNet's "Best of 2005" list.

 IGN: The Chumscrubber Review
The Chumscrubber attempts to ride a razor's edge between sly, dark comedy and shadowy menace, but Posin accomplishes this chiefly through tossing together random bits of affectation, including computer-animated segments, distorted sound mix elements, weird interstitials and some admittedly nice Super-35 cinematography, from Lawrence Sher, which spotlights the film's desert town setting.
His piercingly captivating performance may merit a rental for those who are big fans of the young actor, but honestly, otherwise you won't be missing much.
The Chumscrubber is illustrative of one of the film business' longest and grandest traditions — its susceptibility to showmanship.

Considering the critical drubbing it received upon its theatrical release last fall, maybe it's naïve to give The Chumscrubber the benefit of the doubt--but where most accused it of sounding the death knell for the cinema of suburbia, I saw it as a full-blown attempted murder of same.
Dean's father (William Fichtner) is a best-selling author of self-help books who advocates his family's dysfunction hoping it will generate material and has turned Dean into the Cookie Monster of anti-depressants.
There's certainly a lot of honey in "The Making of The Chumscrubber" (12 mins.)--debuting helmer Arie Posin, the son of an unidentified Russian protest filmmaker, seems to have worked some Raymond Shaw magic on his co-conspirators, including Tarantino's erstwhile producing partner Lawrence Bender.

Those perils, by the way, are dramatized in the form of "the Chumscrubber," a video game/cartoon amalgam in which a beheaded teen survives the apocalypse and swings his detached head at an army of zombies.
It’s an interesting conceit, but the filmmakers introduce the Chumscrubber a bit late, and his final-reel "payoff" is more of a piffle.
But The Chumscrubber, a soft satire at best, is dogged by a feeling of been-there, done-that.

The adult characters (including Glenn Close, John Heard, Rita Wilson and a dithering Ralph Fiennes, in bizarre grinning-idiot mode… perhaps recalling his own work in Maid in Manhattan?) are a collection of forgetful, self-obsessed neurotics, and the characterizations of its youthful ensemble are hardly better, pieced together from comfortable — if colorfully extrapolated — archetypes.
The Chumscrubber attempts to ride a razor’s edge between sly, dark comedy and shadowy menace, but Posin accomplishes this chiefly through tossing together random bits of affectation, including computer-animated segments, distorted sound mix elements, weird interstitials and some admittedly nice Super-35 cinematography, from Lawrence Sher, that spotlights the film’s desert town setting.

Director Arie Posin was born in Israel, his parents are from Russian, they moved to Canada, and eventually made their way to America when he was a teenager.
Emphasizing the ever widening gap between teenagers and their parents, The Chumscrubber dissects suburbia to reveal a core that's not necessarily rotten, but one that's hollow after years of numbing fears instead of confronting them.
The film stars Jamie Bell (the lead in Billy Elliot) as Dean, a loner whose only friend, Troy Johnson, is the local prescription drug dealer at the high school.

The Chumscrubber: At least it has to be better than its name, right?
Sadly, no. The feature debut of writer Zac Stanford and director Arie Posin, The Chumscrubber has seemingly been assembled by cross-referencing tired points about suburban alienation with recent movies of note, and hoping that something new and interesting comes out of the process.
Posin establishes early on that he has a real flair for the technical aspects of directing, and he's assembled—or, more likely, been handed by high-profile producers Lawrence Bender and Bonnie Curtis—a remarkable cast.
