The college was established by South Carolina's legislature to act as a Municipal Guard for the protection of the city of Charleston and vicinity; the first cadets were enrolled in 1843.
The college was established by South Carolina's legislature in 1842, and the first twenty cadets reported to The Citadel, then located at Marion Square in downtown Charleston, on March 20, 1843.
The Citadel was closed for 17 years between 1865 and 1882, when the academy was reopened by an act of the U.S. Congress and the South Carolina General Assembly.
