Random House Academic Resources | The City and the Pillar by Gore Vidal
“The City and the Pillar is evocative, sad, clear-eyed, and searingly familiar, even to those who journey through a society less repressive than the one it describes.
Beginning as a fascinating time capsule of gays leading clandestine lives of the don’t-ask/don’t-tell/don’t-even-think-it variety in the 1940s, the novel in its final chapters dares to take on the theme of relations between gay and straight men in America, a civil war that has yet to find its truce.
“The City and the Pillar had the courage to subject American masculinity, in all its parochialism, to the kind of scrutiny that only one who dared to be himself, like Gore Vidal, could achieve.

Opening with a quote concerning the fate of Lot's wife from the Book of Genesis,The Pillar and the City (1948) is a semi-autobiographical novel in which Jim Willard plainly and honestly discusses his love for classmate Bob Ford.
The City and the Pillar is dedicated "For the memory of J.T." and Palimpsest explains who this is. Jimmie is cast in an idealized "fulfilling half" of old, as Jim does of Bob in the 1948 novel.
But Jimmie is killed and Gore Vidal, in real life, drifted through a sea of anonymous encounters, eventually settling into what he calls a lifelong but "sexless union" with Howard Auster.

In the half-century or more since The City and the Pillar was published, Vidal, raised by his senator grandfather to be a senator himself and perhaps one day the President, has become instead a kind of permanent dissident-in-exile, relentlessly criticizing American political culture and mores, often in the pages of this magazine.
Despite the emergence over the past thirty years of a powerful civil rights movement for gay rights, the fact is that the category remains more a cultural identification and a locus of institution-building than an exhaustive description of same-sex desire as actually practiced.

 Yale Bulletin and Calendar
The symposium celebrates the life and work of Vidal on the 55th anniversary of the publication of his groundbreaking book "The City and the Pillar." This early text is credited with promoting a new understanding of identity, celebrating same-sex sexuality while at the same time refuting any essential distinction between same-sex and male-female couples.
This year marks the publication of Vidal's newest book -- "Inventing a Nation: Washington, Adams, Jefferson," from Yale University Press -- as well as the re-issue of the long-out-of-print "The City and the Pillar."
The symposium speakers will include writer and activist Larry Kramer, who will present introductory remarks, and leading Vidal scholars Donald Pease, Michael Moon, Marcie Frank and author David Leavitt, who will present papers examining the impact of "The City and the Pillar." A roundtable discussion with Vidal will follow the presentations.
