Instead of a planet with a city on the mountain peaks which is the city on the edge of forever, we are given a lumpy doughnut that speaks to the crew.

They communicate with a machine who calls itself the "The Guardian of Forever." Suddenly the doctor – still under the influence of the drug – leaps forward, pushes them aside and jumps into the hole in the stone, through the circle, and disappears.
Having prevented McCoy from changing the future they go back through the Guardian of Forever into their time – which seems to the others as if the were gone some moments only.

"City..." has become over the years one of the all-time favourite episodes of all Trek fans and I like it too but I have some trouble accepting some of the dramatic licence that this story expects us to take.

Since its first airing 38 years ago, "City" has managed to simultaneously be one of the most beloved and one of the most controversial episodes of TOS.
The first truly excellent use of time travel for the series, a touching and tragic love story, and the willingness to not automatically go for the happy ending may have been the first proof that this series was not the science fiction your average television viewer of the time was used to.
It's been almost 20 years since I read it but I'm certain I remember that the original script for City on the Edge of Forever was printed in Harlan Ellison's book, The Glass Teat II, which is a collection of television columns he wrote.

I love the City on the Edge of Forever and it is probably the best TOS ep ever so I decided to vote against it, simply because I have voted for it for other reasons.
I went for "For the world is hollow" as the best overall McCoy episode but i think his wild eyed performance in "City on the edge..." sticks in my mind more

Director Joseph Pevney's, "THE CITY ON THE EDGE OF FOREVER," is considered by some Trekkers, to be the best classic "Star Trek" episode.
Although the historical scenes we see projected on the portal are just old, recycled movie scenes, slow motion shots of McCoy, Kirk, and Spock passing through the portal are pretty decent.
"THE CITY ON THE EDGE OF FOREVER" should be highly watchable for most Sci-Fi viewers.
