When he first planned his "The Life and Times of $crooge McDuck" series, Don Rosa intended to start chapter I with a 7 pages overview of the history of The Clan McDuck from 122 AD until Scrooges childhood in the 1870s.
The Crown of the Crusader Kings (2001) Don Rosa indicates that at least one McDuck living in the end of the 15th century, was a member of (or at least in contact with) The Knights Templar.

Who's who in Duckburg - The clan McDuck
The McDucks is a very old, and in earlier times a very rich Scottish Clan belonging to the aristocracy.
When $crooge was born in 1867, the McDuck family was poor (but they still owned their Castle at Dismal Downs) and lived in Glasgow.
Also in the Netherlands the prefix "Mc" is used in the name of the Clan while it seems that $crooge in the Dutch translations, dropped the "Mc" when he emigrated to America.

IGN: IGN FilmForce Weekend Shopping Guide 6/10/05: Clan McDuck
One of the people I hope to finally meet in person at this year's con (I've had plenty of near-misses) is Don Rosa.
Of the creators that could possibly lay claim to inheriting the mantle of the late Carl Barks (creator of Scrooge McDuck and comicbook storyteller extraordinaire), I feel Rosa has the most impressive claim, based solely on the incredible quality of the Duck tales he's produced over the last 15+ years.
Featuring an introduction by Matt Groening, the series remains the finest reprint of a comic strip I've ever laid eyes on.
