The Cloud of Unknowing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Cloud of Unknowing is a practical spiritual guidebook thought to have been written in the 14th century by an anonymous English monk who counsels a young student to seek God not through knowledge but through love.
The practical prayer advice contained in The Cloud of Unknowing formed the basis for the practice of centering prayer, a form of Christian meditation developed by Trappist monks William Meninger and Thomas Keating in the 1970s.
The Cloud of Unknowing is also the title of an unrelated theatrical film directed by Richard Sylvarnes and released in the autumn of 2004.

The Yoga-Sutras of Patanjali and The Cloud of Unknowing: A Preliminary Step in Assessing the Ontological Accuracy of ...
It is true that both the Yoga-Sutras and The Cloud of Unknowing consider that with which one becomes unified in the mystical union as the ultimate basis of all that exists.
The Cloud of Unknowing seems to represent the mystical union as the highest happiness because in the union one experiences directly the incomparable love and power of God, which, although the mystic is unaware of his own existence, nevertheless has an extremely pleasurable effect on him.
One suggestion is that the author of The Cloud of Unknowing actually experienced a monadic union with ultimate reality in the same way Patanjali did, but his upbringing in the context of Christianity prevented him from having the vocabulary and conceptual apparatus necessary to describe the union in anything other than dualistic terms.

 The Cloud of Unknowing: Introduction
The Cloud of Unknowing, by contrast, is essentially apophatic in its emphasis and focuses almost entirely on the "silencing" described by Augustine: it collapses the meditation on nature to brief allusion, and discusses the soul's activities only in the most practical manner.
Together with love, this unknowing, or negation of knowledge in the ordinary sense, is the main activity of the apophatic method, although affirmation, the kataphatic movement, is frequently present.
Having looked summarily at the whole Cloud of Unknowing, we might note in conclusion the remarkable fact that in the Middle Ages, mysticism is one of the most important sources for aesthetics, the analysis of the nature and manifestations of beauty.

The title comes from the author's metaphor of contemplative prayer as struggling to get beyond a "cloud of unknowing" which separates us from experiencing God's presence.
He dismisses the idea of using understanding as a means of reaching God, since God is unfathomable; instead, he suggests, we embrace God with our love.
Having established that love is the means of going through "the cloud," the author urges the reader to "beat upon the cloud of unknowing with the hammer of your love," and to "pierce the cloud of unknowing with the arrow of your love." The author's passion for God is contagious, and his prose is inspirational.

God has revealed Himself as a relational being through the very nature of His Creation, through the very act of the Incarnation, and He continues, to this day, to pursue us passionately, longing for a holy relationship with the human race.
Therefore it is of the utmost importance for us to find ways to emerge from the fog of the world and gaze into the infinite intent of His revelation, "like a sharp dart of longing love..." as the author of The Cloud of Unknowing says.
As we "drink in" the present moment, gradually moving away from concepts and words, the silence of God unfolds His embrace; therein lies our ultimate quest and the womb of our destiny: contact, communion.
