Film as Art: Danél Griffin's Guide to Cinema
The Cocoanuts was the first of six films that the Brothers did for Paramount, from 1929-1933 (the others were Animal Crackers, Monkey Business, I’ll Say She Is, Horse Feathers and, arguably their best, Duck Soup).
These six remain the best of their many films, due to the fact that instead of being slaves to the films’ plots, the plots were slaves to the Brothers’ anarchic slapstick.
The Cocoanuts presents the Brothers in good form, and is a good cinematic first step towards the masterpieces that would follow in the next few years.

The plot of running a resort in Florida is only the framework for the antics, the humor comes more from the interaction of these brothers than the situations they are in, as with most of the Marx Brothers films the story is secondary, an excuse to perform.

THE COCOANUTS generally worked for me due to the many funny moments, especially from Groucho and his witty lines.
I found it to be flawed a bit, due to the intrusive and very dated musical numbers, as well as the stagy filming.
A bit of trivia: the original premiere cut for this movie was 140 minutes, and was whittled down to 96 for general release.

It should be said that this is the first film the inimitable Margaret Dumont did with the Brothers, and she is an excellent foil as always, though much stiffer and stuffier than she would be later on.
THE COCOANUTS, on any level, remains a historically intriguing artifact from a time when talkies were brand new and the idea of adapting a full scale Broadway musical was still relatively untested.

The Cocoanuts Movie Review (1929) from Channel 4 Film
So the Brothers' cinematic career now effectively begins with The Cocoanuts, released by Paramount in 1929 and based on a stage musical-comedy they'd played to great acclaim on Broadway in the middle of the decade.
Never at risk of letting a good joke escape by filming it in a cinematically interesting way, The Cocoanuts is visually pedestrian but hilarious.
It pretty much sets the tone for the rest of the Marx Brothers' work: their boundless energy is already much in evidence, and Groucho's humour is as biting and intelligent as it gets.

Review of The Cocoanuts, starring Groucho Marx, Chico Marx, Harpo Marx, Zeppo Marx, Margaret Dumont
The Cocoanuts was the first movie filmed by the Marx Brothers, and remains one of their funniest.
It features the Marx Brothers in the roles that they soon made famous -- Groucho, with the grease paint mustache, master of the fast wisecrack; Chico, the vaguely-Italian pianist who constantly looking to con someone, and Harpo, who never speaks, but is the master of outrageous comedy and pantomime.
Sound films were still so new that soundproofing was not installed, so the film had to be shot in the early hours of the morning to reduce outside traffic noise.

At the very least, The Cocoanuts is a far better film than their later efforts like Love Happy, which were made long after the Brothers’ creativity had waned.
After one of many fakes is unveiled at the party, the subsequent search for both the painting and the thieves sends this gem of a film spiraling towards it conclusion via creative vaudeville-style gags, a couple of short musical interludes, and of course, plenty of clever word play by Groucho Marx.
In other areas, particularly as it relates to The Cocoanuts and Animal Crackers the soundtracks are not quite as pleasing, although there is little doubt that the source material limited what could be done to clean them up.

The great George S. Kaufman-Irving Berlin-Marx Brothers classic The Cocoanuts is as nutty and wild as any Marx Brothers aficionado could want in its resurrection at Cornell under the smart and canny direction of Bruce Levitt.
Laughter-compelling eye contact with the audience is a hallmark of this production, and of course the master of such manipulation is Brian Russell's Schlemmer (Groucho), the conniving owner of The Cocoanuts, a Florida resort with very little to recommend it.
He answers calls for room service with totally unhelpful insouciance, and he counters the bellhops' demand for back pay with, "You don't want to be wage slaves, do you?" Best of all, he keeps up a random, running commentary laced with Groucho puns that set the audience groaning happily in counter commentary.

I've seen The Cocoanuts twice before, on 35mm and a Channel Four screening, and in both cases the sound was atrocious - so much so that it was hard to make out much of the dialogue (which benefited Harpo enormously, but did little for the film as a whole).
