Remembering that the production year is 1955 explains the only down side to the story which is a one sided, and often unrealistic bias toward the POW characters.
There have been many books written about the events that took place at Colditz castle, not least the memoirs of Pat Reid (the real life POW portrayed by John Mills on screen) and many will bemoan the fact that there is a lot missing from the story.
After watching the Colditz story I was very disappointed at the lack of escape attempts outlined in the books such as the "Glider" I also found the humor of this movie very corny.

In the history of Colditz only one prisoner was ever shot trying to escape, the incident portrayed in the film is accurate but the character in reality was one Lt. Michael Sinclair and he met his end in 1944.
As said, the film is a faithful recreation of some of the events at Colditz castle, even down to the problems of the multi-lingual community making translators necessary, the respective characters speak the languages they are supposed to without resorting to accented English, which I always find clumsy, if not disrespectful, in movies in general.
In 2000 Channel 4 produced a documentary on one of the more astonishing escape attempts wherein a motor less plane, a glider, was actually contructed in the attic of the castle by the inmates.
