Generally, the Comic Strip films made for the BBC are deemed to be of a lower quality than those made for Channel Four.
Many of The Comic Strip films are not as well known as they should be and it’s about time that they were treated with the respect they deserve.

The first Comic Strip film to display absolutely no charm or sophistication whatsoever, the derivative set-pieces, ridiculous characterization and terrible dialogue render most of this almost unwatchable.
The Comic Strip wilderness years came to a sudden end half a decade after the close of the dreadful 1993 season.

One of the defining British comedies of the 1980s was The Comic Strip Presents…, which was the first comedy programme on the new Channel 4 in 1983 (Five Go Mad in Dorset).
A highlight is the Comic Strip episode The Strike, where he plays Al Pacino as Arthur Scargill to Jennifer Saunder’s Meryl Streep (a touch of the juxtaposition later to be used to such effect in Stella Street).
The Comic Strip Presents… Five Go Mad in Dorset was the first comedy programme on Channel 4 (it went out on their first evening).

The Comic Strip gets its name from a Stage show/revue of the same name which ran from Oct 1980 to July 1981 and starred the regulars that appear in the TV Comic Strip films (Richardson, Sayle, Planer, Mayall, Edmondson, French and Saunders among others).
Generally these later Comic Strips are not as interesting as the early shows.
Ratings: As all the Comic strip episode (with a few exceptions) have very different storylines and characters, some shows hit the mark a lot better than others.

While many thousands of words have been written about the Comic Strip Presents TV films - mostly in praise but some vitriolic in their scorn - it is likely that no better description exists of these unique contributions to British TV.
Financed by theatrical impresario Michael White - who presented the 1963 revue Cambridge Circus in the West End, which led, eventually, to Monty Python and The Goodies by way of radio gem I'm Sorry, I'll Read That Again - the Comic Strip club had opened in October 1980 at the Boulevard Theatre in London.
Like the Comedy Store before it, this was located within a Soho strip joint, but, unlike that other and more famous venue, what was staged at the Comic Strip was more like a show, with the same personnel repeating nightly - and honing, all the while - the same act.
