The Conformist Movie Review (1970) from Channel 4 Film
It says a lot about the quality of The Conformist that Bernardo Bertolucci would be considered a great director even if he'd never made another film.
A sensual political period drama, The Conformist (aka Il Conformista) stars the ace French actor Jean-Louis Trintignant as Marcelo Clerici, a weak-willed Italian who has embraced Mussolini and his Brown Shirts.
Encouraged to embrace conformity by his new bride, Giulia (Sandrelli), Clerici finds that his French honeymoon is to double as an attempt on the life of his former teacher (Tarascio), now a political dissident living in exile.

Based on the acclaimed novel by Alberto Moravia (who greatly admired Bertolucci's adaptation), this milestone of cinematic style concerns one of Bertolucci's dominant themes--the duality of sexual and political conflict--in telling the story of Marcello (Jean-Louis Trintignant), a 30-year-old Italian haunted by the memory of a sexually traumatic childhood experience.
While the psychosexual aspects of Bertolucci's Oscar®-nominated screenplay remain dramatically compelling, The Conformist is now better known as a dazzling stylistic breakthrough, with sweeping camera moves, oblique angles, and innovative editing brilliantly applied to Bertolucci's rich themes of internalized conflict.
Some 40 years ago he made "The Conformist" which is his most provocative film and remains a classic of the Italian new wave.

The finale of the film, set in a dark, dank prostitute-riddled corner of the Colosseum on the night of Il Duce's fall, with distracting searchlights and other odd lighting effects, is a far cry from the cleanly lit, orderly spaces of the earlier scenes.
The central paradox in all of his early films is the difficulty of reconciling the individual with the masses, a familiar theme among middle-class intellectuals and artists dabbling in socialism.
The problem was reconciled in a variety of ways (self-negation in The Conformist and The Spider's Stratagem, Utopian deus ex machina in 1900) but with his later films, Bertolucci finally begins to acknowledge that such a reconciliation might not be possible.
