Within the higher education community, Shapiro has chaired the boards of the Association of American Universities (AAU) and the Consortium on Financing Higher Education (COFHE) and has served on the boards of the American Council on Education (ACE) and other organizations.
Shapiro has received 14 honorary degrees, including an honorary degree (along with his twin brother, Bernard, principal and vice chancellor of McGill University in Montreal) from the University of Edinburgh, the alma mater of two of Princeton's most distinguished presidents, John Witherspoon and James McCosh.
As a national leader, Shapiro is the only president to have been listed by Change magazine among the most influential university presidents in both the 1980s and the 1990s.

 Study shows college rankings do matter
Ehrenberg, director of the Cornell Higher Education Research Institute and the Irving M. Ives Professor of Industrial and Labor Relations and Economics at Cornell, and James Monks, senior economist at the Consortium on Financing Higher Education (COFHE).
The study was just published, under the title "U.S. News and World Report's College Rankings: Why Do They Matter?" in the November-December 1999 issue of Change magazine.

 Diana Chapman Walsh
President Walsh currently serves on the boards of Amherst College, the State Street Corporation and the Consortium on Financing Higher Education, of which she served as chair for the 2003-2004 academic year.
