They expect that she will make some sort of comment – either admitting her guilt or denying it – but she refuses to comment, claiming it's none of their business who she slept with in college, when it has no bearing on her current life or capabilities as a candidate.

The movie tries for a jaded, insider feel but the cynicism is in all the wrong places, as is the idealism.
Looking at politics in The Contender is like looking at a landscape in a painting where the sky is painted orange, the sun painted green and all the vegetation is purple.
The movie ignores the tribal warfare the two parties have engaged in ever since they stopped literally shooting at each other in Appomattix and acts as though the current climate was a spontaneous creation.

"The Contender" Movie Review - Campus Voice
The movie chronicles the confirmation of a new vice-president.
Obviously, the movie borrows from real life, regarding President Clinton's supposedly god-awful sexual misconduct, yet Laine Hanson was strong enough to stick by her guns and continue with her privacy policy.
The Contender is a great movie, though it does have some trite moments at the end.

JoBlo reviews the movie "The Contender"
As for The Contender's conclusion, it wasn't too much of a surprise, given that the film was decidedly liberal from the start.
I felt like the theme of this movie was "quit picking on us democrats just because we like kinky, slutty things." Aside from the blatant liberal themes and beliefs, the movie was okay, but it didn't offer anything too special.
It's obvious that this movie is trying to alleviate the sexual scandal of President Clinton to give the Democratic Party a chance on re-election, but again, it is a great movie with excellent acting.

Radio Free Movie Review: The Contender (2000)
While it's basically an ensemble story, The Contender is largely the tale of Shelly Runyon (Gary Oldman) and his quest to destroy the political career of Vice Presidential appointee Laine Hanson (Joan Allen).
Runyon is an idealistic, if not embittered, man who wholeheartedly believes Hanson is not fit for the office of Vice President, and as head of the committee that is to approve her position, he does everything within his power to destroy her.
I obviously can't give it away this early in the game, but let's just say it's completely unrealistic--it involves a politician being so honest that they're willing to ruin themselves for their ideals, and I find that highly unbelievable in a field where deception and pandering are some of the cornerstones of the career.

If The Contender has a weakness, it's that Lurie resorts to a music-swelling, sea-to-shining-sea speech by Bridges to hammer home his conclusion – it's totally out of character with the sparse look and gritty simplicity of the rest of the film.
And for a story line whose philosophy is so firmly in the "private lives are nobody's business" camp, there are a few too many images of the sexual incident in question and too much revealed of what actually happened – it tries to both take the high road and titillate.
With impressive performances and an intelligent plot, The Contender is a rewarding study of a world where ideologies constantly joust with personal beliefs, and the latter usually lose.
