The Count of Monte Cristo is the cinematic equivalent of comfort food: familiar and satisfying.
So Edmond escapes, finds the treasure, and resurrects himself as the Count of Monte Cristo, well-read and filled, after 13 years in prison, with a lust for revenge so metallic and deep that his entire new life is centered on exacting this vengeance.
The first, a crash-course intro to the work of Monte Cristo scribe Alexander Dumas basically paints the prolific author as something of a hack, who was in the writing biz as much for the money and fame as for the love of the written word.

Even though the portrayal of the Count in Gankutsuou is more one-dimensional, it oddly works really well on screen, mainly due to the fact that the people that he exacts revenge upon deserve it.

Alexandre Dumas's _The Count of Monte Cristo_ is one of the greatest novels of all time and in fact stands at the fountainhead of the entire stream of popular adventure-fiction.
The cold, brooding, vampiric Count (born Edmond Dantes; known also, among other aliases, as "Sinbad the Sailor," Lord Wilmore, and a representative of the firm of Thomson and French) is the literary forebear of every dark hero from Sherlock Holmes and the Scarlet Pimpernel to Zorro, Batman, the Green Hornet, and Darkman.
"The Count of Monte Cristo" is a tale of adventure-yes, it is a tale of love-yes, but what this novel truly is, is a tale of revenge.

Unlike Albert's lifelong best friend Baron Franz d'Epinay, the Count doesn't snort over Albert's dreams of finding a passionate love, a woman who touches his heart in a way foreign to his dismissive fiancée, who was chosen by arrangement between their upper-crust families.
The count indulges Albert's romantic fancies, though he also presents him with uncomfortable opinions and ghastly choices, all in the name of entertainment.
And when Albert's naïveté and temper nearly get him killed, until the count steps in to rescue him, their relationship is sealed: Albert agrees to be the count's conduit into French high society, which, without a sponsor, would be inclined to see him as a backwater-planet upstart or impostor.

In 2002, the remake of The Count of Monte Cristo, based on the Alexandre Dumas novel, helped push Shearmur into the limelight.
Calling in the talents of frequent Elliot Goldenthal collaborator, orchestrator Robert Elhai (who would provide the dark soundscape for Reign of Fire a few months later), Shearmur delivered a score supporting the adventure and majesty of the film and reflective of the time period in which it was set.
The music becomes more playful and romantic during the second half as Dantes plots his revenge as the Count of Monte Cristo, but Shearmur delves back into dark, bombastic music in "Retribution", closing the film with a powerful low brass cue.

The Count of Monte Cristo review
Returning to France under the name of the lavish Count Monte Cristo, he uses his fortune to get back at those who sent him to jail and meets again with his former fiancee Mercedès (Dagmara Dominczyk), now married to Mondego.
It is certainly regrettable that the screenwriter didn't keep the original bittersweet finale, but this is after all an old style and charming swashbuckling film and at least, contrary to the supposedly faithful French adaptation with Gerard Depardieu, it does not sink into unexpected ridicule.
Unlike Hollywood's latest attempts to the genre, this Count of Monte Cristo doesn't deserve to be sent to the Chateau d'If.
