Originally inspired by the Beatles, the Cowsills developed their musicianship and harmonized vocals in performances at school dances and churches in their hometown.
The Cowsills also made many television appearances throughout the late 1960s and into the early 1970s, including on their own television special.
The Cowsills were also known as spokespeople for the American Dairy Association, appearing in advertisements promoting milk.

Cowsill reportedly left phone messages for his sister Susan on September 1st, and was not heard from again.

NEW ORLEANS -- Barry Cowsill, a member of the popular 1960s singing family the Cowsills, was found dead on a wharf nearly four months after he disappeared when Hurricane Katrina flooded the city.
Cowsill's body, recovered Dec. 28 from the Chartres Street Wharf, was identified with dental records Tuesday, said Dr. Louis Cataldie, head of the state hurricane morgue in Carville.
The Cowsills were the inspiration for the TV series ''The Partridge Family'' and recorded a series of top hits between 1967 and 1970.

One of the true pioneers of the where-are-they-now phenomenon, The Cowsills were a Rhode Island family comprised of a mom, five brothers and a sister, who in the late '60s predated The Osmonds and The Jackson Five as America's premier musical family.
It's no secret that The Partridge Family was created to approximate the look and the sound of The Cowsills, a fact that firmly entrenches them in pop cultural history.
While the bubblegum factor is writ large, and many of their songs do sound like cartoon pop from some Saturday morning animated rock band, it is useless to try and resist their power: You will want to sing along, and you will like it.

In 1978, independent record producer Chuck Plotkin (who had earlier enjoyed some success producing the group Orleans) contacted me saying that he had a group of musicians, all members of a single family, who were preparing to record an album.
