Witchcraft - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Members of some religions have applied the term witchcraft in a pejorative sense to refer to all magical or ritual practices other than those sanctioned by their own doctrines, though this has become less common, at least in the Western world.
Such religions consider their own ritual practices to be not at all magical, but rather simply variations of prayer.
Under the monotheistic religions of the Levant (primarily Judaism, Christianity, and Islam), witchcraft came to be associated with heresy, rising to a fever pitch among the Catholics, Protestants, and secular leadership of the European Late Medieval/Early Modern period.

AcademicDB - Religion as a Tool of States Craft,
the reasons why Rousseau feels that a civil religion is necessary, and it is through looking at these reason that we come to understand how religion is a tool of the state.
In an emerging society religion is particularly useful as a tool of states craft, because it creates an awe and fear of a power even larger then the state, namely the divine.
Religion then becomes the means to convince the people to subject themselves to the laws of the sate by borrowing the people's inherent fear of God and using it, so that they will follow the laws of the state because it is God's will.

Enchanted Earth - What is Wicca
Often referred to as "The Old Religion", "The Craft of The Wise", "An Earth Based Religion" as it is based on the practices of our pagan ancestors and it is the worship of The Goddess and God through the Earth, Moon, Sun, crops, rivers, seasons, trees, water, air, fire etc.
Wiccans feel that most of the modern religions are out of balance with only one all powerful male God, and only the use of male ministers, priests etc. Wiccans feel that a male deity revered without a female counterpart is only half effective, hence our worship revolves around both the male and the female personifications.
When the Christian religion started on its organised and hierarchical path, it required its priests to be celibate, and its followers to be likewise unless married and trying to reproduce.

As a religion, the Craft is a revival and/or reconstruction of the pre-Christian religions of Europe, especially Northern Europe (giving us Celtic or Norse traditions), sometimes elsewhere (giving us Graeco-Roman, Egyptian, or Levantine traditions).
The deities of the Craft, if they have any inclination at all, incline towards the positive; most are neither "good" nor "evil," they just are, in the same way any elemental force, like fire or the weather, is. Our deities give us power; how we choose to use that power is up to us.

I believe that a man’s religion or mode of worship should not exclude him from the Order of Freemasonry, provided he also believes in the existence of a Supreme Being, and that Supreme Being will punish vice and reward virtue.
