The development of shore-based bands in the 1800s led to the creation of the Naval Academy Band, which grew in size and importance during the Civil War.
In 1916, a 16-piece band from the battleship USS Kansas was ordered to the Washington Navy Yard to augment a 17-piece band aboard the presidential yacht Mayflower.
The increasing tempo of the band's duties led the bandmaster to seek more suitable quarters in the yard's "Sail Loft," and sailmakers were soon cutting and stitching their canvas to the rhythms of the music.

The band proved to be an exciting live show: Eddie Phillips often played his guitar with a violin bow (which was later gain notoriety by more popular bands) while Kenny Pickett painted canvases and then set them ablaze.
The band reformed several times in the 1990's to perform, even producing a live album, "Laying the Ghost." Kenny Pickett died of a heart attack on January 17, 1997.

I generally try and avoid bands on the revival circuit but as someone who's owned Creation compilations since around 1980, clearly I was in no minority when I rousted myself across Brooklyn for the group's US debut on the night of Sunday November 4.
The Creation may be legendary among cognoscenti of the sixties, but it's not like the founding members are kicking back in country houses, living off royalties.
The only Creation song on the Rushmore soundtrack is Making Time, but by placing it in pole position on a soundtrack that also features the Who, the Kinks and many another British Invasion band, it did much to bring the Creation's music to an audience that was amazed to hear what it had been missing.

At the end of 1966, Bob Garner left and was replaced by Kim Gardner, and in March 1968, Pickett left and was replaced by Ron Wood (both of these new members had been in The Birds), but Pickett soon returned, replacing both Phillips and Gardner.
Shortly afterwards, however, Creation disbanded; Pickett continued as songwriter for their American producer, Shel Talmy, and also became American road manager for Led Zeppelin; Ron Wood joined The Faces; Gardner co-formed Ashton, Gardner and Dyke and was later a member of Badger; Jones became a cabaret singer.
Creation re-formed in the mid 1980s with Phillips, Pickett, Dalton, and Mick Avory (drums, ex-Kinks).
