Interview - The Crimea: Silent Uproar
Rising from the ashes of the moderately successful UK band The Crocketts, The Crimea are about to release their debut full-length, Tragedy Rocks, in January to the delight of fans and critics whose appetite was only whetted by the EP that came out earlier this year.
Silent Uproar spoke with lead singer Davey MacManus while they were on their most recent jaunt around the US about their album, touring and the usual rock'n'roll stuff.
The talented five-piece, whose members hail from all over, offers up music that is not only catchy but is damned intelligent and quirky at the same time.

 Gurdjieff and His School
Soon after, as the Revolution drew near and the coming breakdown of civil order began to announce itself, Gurdjieff and a small band of dedicated pupils, including Thomas and Olga de Hartmann, made perilous journeys to the Crimea and Tiflis.
Although there is no reason to doubt the accuracy of his account, the fact remains that the principal aim of Gurdjieff’s writings was not to provide historical information but to serve as a call to awakening and as a continuing source of guidance for the inner search that is the raison d’être of his teaching.
His writings therefore demand and support the search for a finer quality of self-attention on the part of the reader, failing which the thought contained in them is unverifiable at its deeper levels.

His emphasis on the role of self-observation has also had widespread influence, to the extent that there is a vague, but common, understanding among spiritual seekers today that the alternatives of introspection or positivistic behaviorism by no means exhaust the possibilities of one’s ability to study and know oneself.
But just as Gurdjieff’s influence cannot be measured by the number of individuals who espouse his ideas, neither can his influence on the culture be measured by verbal formulations or concepts which he originated and which enjoy a certain fashion.

His reign saw the further centralization of The Golden Horde, the reconquest of areas of The Crimea, and the conversion of Siberia to Islam.
After several days of wondering across the steppes the small band of Aragonese were weak and almost to the point of death.
The divisions of The Golden Horde are very complex and varied, to Westerners we appear as a vast and highly centralized empire, but in reality The Golden Horde is merely a confederation of Khans and Princes with A Great Khan at its head.

Musical Taste: Tracks recommended by Ricard
The Crimea are the current guise of 90's Welsh indie band The Crocketts, who were pretty rubbish and best forgotten.
This is the only song I've heard by the band since they became the Crimea so not sure whether it's a one-off or they really have improved since the days of the Crocketts (Aberystwyths most famous band!).
However, this song, which I think was their first single as the Crimea, is fantastic.

Golden Horde - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Khanate of the Crimea became a vassal state of the Ottoman Empire in 1475 and in 1502 it conquered and annexed what remained of the Golden Horde.
Under the protection of the Ottomans, the Khanate of Crimea continued its existence until annexed by Russia on April 8, 1783 under the reign of Catherine the Great.
This time it broke up into five separate Khanates: Siberia Khanante, Khanate of Kazan, Khanate of Astrakhan, and Khanate of the Crimea all seceding from what remained of the Golden Horde (Great or Big Horde).

The Greeks from north of the Sea of Azov were deported from a band of the Crimean southern coast between Yalta and Sudak which extended to the sub-mountain villages of Styleja, Salgir-Yeni-Sala and Argin-Kara-Koba.
This dialectical variety could have been due to various admixtures of others peoples who populated the southern Crimea (e.g., the Goths) or to different places of origin in their Mediterranean homeland.
The author chooses the place-name Kodyma (the most well-known occurrence of which is the name of a left tributary of the Southern Buh River) as a case for demonstrating the many pitfalls in reconstructing the etymology of such words.

Anyway two members of The Crocketts went on to form the rather great Crimea, and as for the others, they're probably resigned to the same crazy post modest Indie success land that Cliff Jones and the singer from Terris are living.
If you want some biography the only place to go to is this link, but if you haven't got the time for that, the Crocketts were a Welsh 'cow-punk' (their genre definition, not mine) band who signed to V2 in 1997 and split in around 2001.
Anyway I saw the Crocketts supporting the Stereophonics at Southampton Guildhall back in....1999 I believe, and from what I remember they were indeed pretty fantastic.
