Pirate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A pirate is one who robs, pillages, or plunders at sea, or sometimes the shore, without a commission from a recognized sovereign nation.
Pirates readily accepted outcasts from traditional societies, perhaps easily recognizing kindred spirits, and they were known to free slaves from slave ships and welcome them into the pirate fold.
Pirates and other mariners would also sometimes be blinded in one eye through the use of a sextant.

DVD Review - The Crimson Pirate   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
In ’The Crimson Pirate’ Burt Lancaster stars as Captain Vallo, a pirate in the finest swashbuckling tradition who woos the lady, defeats the dastardly villain, and swings from his ship’s rigging with great aplomb.
As the title implies, ’The Crimson Pirate’ is one colorful film and in that regards the video presentation is excellent.
It’s hard to believe that ’The Crimson Pirate’ was directed by none other than Robert Siodmak whose earlier works ’Son of Dracula,’ ’The Killers,’ and ’The Spiral Staircase’ would seem to have little in common with this light-hearted romp.

With tongue planted firmly in cheek, "The Crimson Pirate" (1952) is one of those rare films that's able to poke fun at the action/adventure genre whilst paying the highest tribute to it.
The rest of the pirate crew are appropriately attired in eye patches, hooks, peg legs, seven-league boots, feathers in caps, and sashes at waists, all the while singing proper old sea chanties like "Yo Ho and Up She Rises." They're a motley, scurvy crew, to be sure.
Pirate movies have not fared well in the past few decades, with Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean" one of the few exceptions.

DVD Savant Review: The Crimson Pirate
The Crimson Pirate is a delightful kids' film, a fantasy that revels in action and adventure without the slightest worry about things like history or 'quality filmmaking.' It's simple, direct and robust, with plenty of funny slapstick and even a few jokes for adults - many of which secretly love it.
Carefree pirate Captain Vallo (Burt Lancaster) and his agreeably scurvy crew plunder the Caribbean in accordance with the Pirate's Code, as voiced by first mate Humble Bellows (Torin Thatcher).
Roland Kibbee's script has Lancaster's chesty, mercenary pirate defect to the side of virtue for the sake of a woman (the interesting Eva Bartok of Spaceways and Blood and Black Lace).

Plot: The pirate captain Vallo captures a vessel of the English Navy.
He is about to sell its shipment of arms to rebels when he discovers that the ship is carrying Baron Gruda who has been commissioned to rid the area of rebels.
And ultimately it is too nice a film - the pirates are too much good guys to ever be flguards, in fact they never even wield swords and rather absurdly dispatch people by punching them overboard or knocking them down with throwing pins.

GreenCine | product main - The Crimson Pirate (1952)
Half affectionate parody and half enthusiastic tribute to the swashbuckling pirate epics of the 1930's and 40's, The Crimson Pirate stars Burt Lancaster as Captain Vallo, the smiling leader of a pack of unscrupulous pirates.
One of the passengers on the cargo vessel, Baron Gruda (Leslie E. Bradley), informs Vallo that a political revolt is shaking a island nation in the Caribbean to its foundations.
The pirates set their course to the island, hoping to sell the arms they've just stolen to rebel leader Sebastian (Frederick Leister), while planning to later double their profit by turning him in to the Government leaders who are offering a reward for his capture.

THE CINEMA LASER DVD REVIEW-- THE CRIMSON PIRATE
THE CRIMSON PIRATE ($20) is, without a doubt, one of the most enjoyable swashbuckling pirate movies ever made.
With a decidedly lighthearted streak, THE CRIMSON PIRATE is a showcase for the acrobatic prowess of leading man Burt Lancaster and his vaudeville/circus partner Nick Cravat.
In THE CRIMSON PIRATE, Lancaster portrays Captain Vallo, a thinking man’s pirate, who schemes the big schemes, much to the dismay of his pirate crew that are only interested in a quick and easy booty.

Although this famous pirate movie is very entertaining with lots of slapsticks, it apparently lacks the style of director Robert Siodmak's works in the 1940s, primarily because Lancaster took control over the production telling his mentor what to do.
