The aliens in CUCKOO'S EGG are just humans in disguise (figuratively speaking).
CUCKOOS EGG is also recommended for beginning writers who want an excellent example of "Show, don't Tell." In that, Cherryh is very good.
If you say it is totally instinctual, then this book will not be a problem for you; but, if you are like me and believe a lot of human behavior to be learned, then I do not recommend this book or you will feel cheated by a premise that (for you) is not plausible.

Hofstadter's other books are worth reading too - Metamagical Themas is columns from SciAm, but quite a lot is at least obliquely related to computing.
If you're fed up with a computing job, you can read this and step back from it to know at least there can be some light at the end of the tunnel and not everything management says is right.
I like the books by Simon Singh for light popular science reading.

We're not talking in terms of what happened in The Cuckoos Egg, but I still think it's a matter of serious nature when we have kids that are hacking - and teaching other kids to hack into, or crack - into computers so that they can steal information at the national level.
In Cliff Stoll's book, The Cuckoos Egg, he also says the same thing when he'd discovered that somebody'd entered his computer and he felt this personal sense of violation.
