Britain's oldest daily newspaper, the Daily Courant, celebrated its 300th anniversary yesterday at a ceremony in St Brides, London, attended by Prince Charles.
In fact the Daily Courant only lasted from 1702 until 1735, when it was killed off by King George II - not something Charles could get away with, however much he is tempted.
The newspaper has survived the invention of the telegraph, telephone, radio, cinema, television and (so far) the internet, most of which were forecast to undermine it.

As stamp, paper and other duties were progressively reduced from the 1830s onwards (and all duties on newspapers were gone by 1855) there was a massive growth in overall circulation as major events and improved communications developed the public's need for information.
This was the most significant newspaper of the first half of the 19th century, but from around 1860 there were a number of more strongly competitive titles, each differentiated by its political biases and interests.
I think the statement about the ''The Daily Courant'' is erroneous and this brief section should be replaced.

The growing demand for newspapers owing to the spread of literacy and the introduction of steam- and then electric-driven presses caused the daily circulation of newspapers to rise from the thousands to the hundreds of thousands and eventually to millions.

It is difficult to believe, for example, that the overture, with its delicate writing for two solo violins, could have been conceived with outdoor performance in mind.
