Over several years, CanWest Global attempted to use The Daily News to bolster its news team at its MITV broadcasting station, however this ended on August 9, 2002 when the paper was sold to GTC Transcontinental Inc., along with other former Southam properties in eastern and western Canada.

The Halifax Daily News reported Tuesday that Jamie Symington and his dog Trakr received the Extraordinary Service to Humanity Award for their search-and-rescue efforts at Ground Zero in New York City in 2001.
Symington joined Halifax police in November 1988 but was suspended in September 2001 after managers saw him on TV at Ground Zero with his retired police dog.
Mark Hobeck, of Halifax police, said he couldn't comment on the civil case while it's before the courts.

The province has managed to write a how-not-to manual on dealing with government employees, but yesterday's agreement with health-care workers on a restricted form of arbitration was a relief to both sides.
