Topic: The Daily Texan

Handbook of Texas Online: DAILY TEXAN
Then in 1963 the regents changed the editorship of the Texan from an elected to an appointed position; in the face of strong opposition from the students, however, the decision was reversed the next year.
In the 1980s and 1990s the editorship of the Texan remained a position elected by the student body; however, the editor's control of the paper was limited to the editorial page, while the rest of the paper was the responsibility of the managing editor, an appointed position.
The Daily Texan has been a consistent standout among college newspapers in the United States and has won several prestigious awards, including the Pacemaker Award from the Associated Collegiate Press in 1965, 1969, 1971, and 1985 and the Gold Crown Award from Columbia Scholastic Press in 1984, 1989, and 1990.

Daily Texan's investigative stories on business school rankings ignored problem
Beginning with the June 16 article and continuing in a series of editorials and letters to the editor, The Daily Texan instigated an effort to insinuate that the statistics U.S. News printed were false and to discredit information reported by Mays Business School along the way.
Had The Daily Texan stuck to this, quite a different story would have been printed that may have focused on the significant changes that Mays had implemented to improve its career positioning services and perhaps investigated the reasons behind UT's feeble numbers.
The Daily Texan has acted as though it has unfolded the investigative report of the century by releasing dramatic editorials saying, "We stand by our story," when in reality, the reporter asked for information that no MBA with any concern for his privacy would want to be public information and that UT doesn't release either.

None of Their Business - Opinion
Despite accusations against A&M's Lowry Mays Business School by The Daily Texan, the student newspaper at The University of Texas, it has been uncovered that not only are the allegations unfounded, but UT's McCombs Business School had bigger problems at home.
In an interview with The Battalion, Lomi Kriel, the writer who wrote the June 16 story, said she was "looking to call those people to see if those rankings hold true." Employment information that students give administrators is voluntarily given in confidence, and is not released for their privacy said the Mays business administrator.
The Daily Texan also implied in the article that other schools cooperated with the reporter.

Newsroom - The Daily Texan   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Maybe Texas politics will have to be dragged kicking and screaming into the modern age, but someone should strap on a helmet and grab hold, because it's time to put up or shut up, and there's a growing dissatisfaction for the backward electoral system in this state.
A 1999 poll conducted by Opinion Analysts indicated that nearly 85 percent of Texans think campaign contributions allow a wealthy few to exert disproportionate influence on the outcome of elections and on the direction of Texas politics in general.
Maybe there's something to the claim that Texas is run by an oligarchy of "good ol' boys," a rich caste of ranchers and oilmen who buy political power in bulk every election cycle.

While Gardner emphasizes that the Student is not targeting the Texan or any other publication, she also makes it clear it will attempt to set itself apart from the political coverage and opinion, particularly of the left-leaning variety, that has long been a hallmark of student papers.
Texan editor Ben Heath noted that it is common policy for papers to prohibit news staffers from working on advertising projects, and denies the oft-repeated charge that the Texan is something of a clique.

Inside Higher Ed :: Reversal at 'Daily Texan'   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
At a meeting of the publications board on April 22, several former editors traveled to Austin to argue not only that abandoning the elected editorship was a bad idea, but that doing so may violate the law.
After a series of disputes with regents in the 1960s, they noted, the assets of the independent company that had overseen the Daily Texan during its first decades of operation were put into a trust held by the university in 1971, as part of an agreement to settle the disputes.
To try to ensure the newspaper’s continued independence, the student journalists (and their lawyers) had insisted at that time as part of the agreement that the student body would continue to elect the editor.
