Most dams and other river-engineering projects are construction boondoggles that fail to deliver what they promise and cause huge damage to ecological systems and human livelihoods.

The Dam Busters (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Dam Busters is a 1954 British war film, set during World War II, and documenting the true story of the RAF's 617 Squadron, the development of the "bouncing bomb", and Operation Chastise - the attack on the Ruhr dams in Germany.
These scenes were cut from ITV's last showing of The Dam Busters after their previous broadcast received complaints for the use of the word nigger.
The film's theme tune, The Dam Busters' March, by Eric Coates became an instant classic for brass band and can still be heard in football grounds during England Football Team matches.

The targets were the three key dams in the Ruhr area, the Möhne and the Sorpe on the Ruhr River and the Eder Dam on the Eder River.
The Dams Raid enabled Churchill, in negotiations with the leaders of these new allies, to point to an effective strike against the hitherto apparently invincible German state so that he was taken more seriously as an ally than might otherwise have been the case.
The Dams Raid was, like many of the air raids, undertaken with an ongoing view to the need to keep drawing German defensive effort back into Germany and away from actual and potential theatres of ground war, a policy which culminated in the Berlin raids of the winter of 1943–44.

Dam Busters The Reel Image Features
The Dam Busters (1955) was one of the first-and remains among the best-of the films that re-create a wartime event by casting actors who resemble those who actually took part in it and using their real names.
Bursting the dams meant inventing an eccentric sort of bomb; one that bounced along the surface of the water then sank against the dam wall; so backroom science had to link hands with front-line courage and this too, is what makes this story so gripping.
The Dam Busters is also one of the few films that weigh wartime advantage against the conscience of a scientist; Redgrave's choked-back feelings as the casualties come in is a magnificent piece of emotional shorthand.

An ‘Air Attack on Dams Committee’ was formed in 1941 under the chairmanship Dr. Pye.
Wallis believed that if this could be done on the lakeside of the dam, the vast pressure applied to that side of the damaged wall would be enough to destroy the dam itself.
To ensure that the bomb went down the dam wall, Wallis planned for the bomb to spin forwards after it had hit the wall — despite the fact that it would be dropped by a bomber spinning backwards.

The four lower Snake River dams, built in the 1960s and early 1970s, as well as other dams have been designed with features to aid both juvenile and adult fish.
In the short term, when the dams are breached, the rapid lowering of the reservoirs could strand some fish in shallow pools that will eventually stagnate.

The ascetic plot of THE DAM BUSTERS, however, has some interesting elements - Wallis' struggle with technical problems and red tape in the first part of the film is nicely contrasted with Gibson's training and the raid itself.
The thing that put THE DAM BUSTERS in the annals of the seventh art is the raid scene that would decades later inspire George Lucas for the final battle in STARS WARS: A NEW HOPE.
THE DAM BUSTERS ends with raid, being portrayed as successful; controversies of its overall success and true effectiveness of the Operation Chastise, as well as the effectiveness of the entire strategic bombing campaign, were left to future historians.

And You Call Yourself a Scientist! - The Dam Busters (1954)
The Dam Busters is a film divided neatly into thirds: the development of Wallace’s theory, and the move from theory to reality; the creation and training of the 617 Squadron; and the mission.
The Dam Busters opens in Barnes Wallace’s backyard, with the scientist using a jury-rigged catapult system to fire marbles across the surface of a small tank of water, his puzzled but intrigued children eagerly retrieving their father’s projectiles from various corners of the garden.
The Dam Busters is that it offers, in the microcosm of Barnes Wallace’s story, a depiction of what scientists worldwide must have experienced during war-time: the moment at which their idea stopped being merely a fascinating theory, and became in truth the means of widespread destruction and the taking of human life.

 FlightSim.Com Review: The Dam Busters
The Dams Raid of 16th/17th May 1943 is undoubtedly the best-known bombing mission in the European Theatre during World War 2.
After the Dams Raid proved Wallis' theories, his "big bomb" concept was re-awakened, the now-proven Lancaster being capable of carrying initially a scaled-down 6-ton version (Tallboy) and eventually (with further modification) the full 10-ton version (Grand Slam).
Several minor dams in the Ruhr area were identified as secondary targets for 617 to attack on the same night (one of these was actually attacked by one of the reserve aircraft), but none of these dams are included in the package.
