Dam Busters The Reel Image Features
The Dam Busters (1955) was one of the first-and remains among the best-of the films that re-create a wartime event by casting actors who resemble those who actually took part in it and using their real names.
Bursting the dams meant inventing an eccentric sort of bomb; one that bounced along the surface of the water then sank against the dam wall; so backroom science had to link hands with front-line courage and this too, is what makes this story so gripping.
The Dam Busters is also one of the few films that weigh wartime advantage against the conscience of a scientist; Redgrave's choked-back feelings as the casualties come in is a magnificent piece of emotional shorthand.

 Cracking Dams: Dambusters
The German dams provided hydroelectric power, water supply, a control of canal levels; thus a blow to the dams would be devastating to the Germans.
A regular bomb would do no harm to the dams; the water would just cushion the impact unless the bomb was right up next to the dam.
Explosives were planted and exploded in the grouting gallery and spillway with the intent to cause a catastrophic flood destroying towns, villages, other dams, and hydroelectric plants.

At the Sorpe Dam, McCarthy hit the parapet with his weapon but failed to breach the dam.
The effect of the raid was much as had been hoped, with factories as far as 40 miles away flooded and a serious shortage of water providing a significant blow to German industry.
Thus took place the mission that earned the name of "Dam Busters" for number 6l7 Squadron and captured the imagination of the British nation at the time.

Dam Busters, The - Richard Todd, Michael Redgrave 1954
This film, with its unforgettable "Dam Busters March" by Eric Coates, recounts the story of the development of the bomb and the devising of special tactics for attacking Germany's industrial heartland.
The great dams of western Germany, harnessing the energy of the rivers Moehne, Eder and Sorbe, were an important power source for the Nazi war effort.
If the dams could be breached, then the loss of electrical energy and the collateral flooding would, it was hoped, cripple German industry and shorten the war.

After the war, an Englishman visited one of the dams with an ex-Luftwaffe pilot, who commented that anyone attempting to attack it at 60 feet was either crazy, or an exceptional pilot.
The flying challenges in the Dam Buster package are high and, just was with 617 pilots, training runs over the Derwent Dam are well worth the effort.

The ascetic plot of THE DAM BUSTERS, however, has some interesting elements - Wallis' struggle with technical problems and red tape in the first part of the film is nicely contrasted with Gibson's training and the raid itself.
The thing that put THE DAM BUSTERS in the annals of the seventh art is the raid scene that would decades later inspire George Lucas for the final battle in STARS WARS: A NEW HOPE.
THE DAM BUSTERS ends with raid, being portrayed as successful; controversies of its overall success and true effectiveness of the Operation Chastise, as well as the effectiveness of the entire strategic bombing campaign, were left to future historians.

And that is how the elite pilots and crews of 617 Squadron - The Dam Busters - were treated as their almost-impossible mission to destroy Germany's major dams and cripple Hitler's war production ended the war faster than almost any other single activity.
The Dam Busters flew in huge Lancaster bombers at extremely low levels - 20 metres - from Britain to the Ruhr and dropped brilliantly designed round bombs that would skip across the water of the dams, roll down their walls and then explode.
A lot of time is spent in the movie on Barnes Wallis' battle to develop the bomb and the training of the air crews, however, there is never a dull moment and when the action comes it is very exciting indeed.

The Dams Raid enabled Churchill, in negotiations with the leaders of these new allies, to point to an effective strike against the hitherto apparently invincible German state so that he was taken more seriously as an ally than might otherwise have been the case.
The Dams Raid was, like many British air raids, undertaken with a view to the need to keep drawing German defensive effort back into Germany and away from actual and potential theatres of ground war, a policy which culminated in the Berlin raids of the winter of 1943–44.
