Black Bottom - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Black Bottom was located on Detroit's East Side, was approximately 0.5 mile² (1.3 km²) in area, and was bounded by Gratiot Avenue, Brush Street, Vernor Highway, and the Grand Trunk railroad tracks.
Black Bottom—the name was given to the area in the nineteenth century for its rich soil—was the cultural and economic heart of the Black community in Detroit from the 1920s through its demolition.
It became nationally famous for its music scene: major blues singers, big bands, and jazz artists—such as like Duke Ellington, Billy Eckstine, Pearl Bailey, Ella Fitzgerald, and Count Basie—regularly performed in the bars and clubs of Paradise Valley entertainment district.

Laws Railroad Museum Historical Site: Bishop, California
In addition to the railroad buildings other construction quickly followed which included many homes, barns, and corrals, two general stores, a rooming house, eating house, hotel, boarding house, pool hall and dance hall, blacksmith shop, post office, barber shop, powder magazine and warehouses.
The decline and demise of Laws and the railroad were the result of the local mines closing, trucking becoming cheaper than rail freight and the city of Los Angeles buying most of the valley for the water rights.
By 1959 when the railroad ceased operation, there was no trace of any of the buildings at Laws as they had all been torn down for salvage.

The Story of The LJ and BS Railroad
While the train is en-route to Counterweight City the Library Junction switcher does a similar "dance" as the Bench Station switcher did -- the tail end cars are swapped with their corresponding cars waiting at Library Junction and the switcher waits with the outbound string for the train to return from Counterweight City.
Arriving at Library Junction the train stops and the FL9 locomotive is uncoupled from the train and pulled past the turnout.
Once the baggage, sleeper, and diner are settled, the train moves up and the lounge is stocked and the coach passengers are boarded.

 Interview with Author Adam Wright
I dedicated Ghost Dance to my two best friends and to B.J. According to conventional wisdom, there are only nine Western plots: the cavalry and Indians story; the repentant gunfighter story; the ranch story; the lawman story; the outlaw story; the railroad story; the revenge story; the range-war story, and the rustler story.
When I was in my twenties (and back in England), I saw a programme on TV about the Sioux Indians' Ghost Dance religion and entered a Radio Derby short story competition with a story about a white man who goes through the Ghost Dance.
Ghost Dance will always be a favourite because it was the first.

Not an ill-looking man, upon the whole, was Henry Decherd, though his reddish-yellow eyes, a bit oblique in their setting, gave the impression alike of a certain touchiness of temper and an unpleasantly fox-like quality of character.
Her hands went to her cheeks, which burned in swift flame, thence to drop to her bosom, where her heart was beating in a confusion of throbs, struggling with the reversed current of the blood of all her tall young body.
You might have been restrained by the feeling that this was almost too unreal, too unusual, this dance of the young girl, all alone, in front of the great mirror which faithfully gave back the passing, flying figure line for line, flush for flush, one bosom-heave for that of the other.

This is a great signature song for the album, setting the mood for what is to come with the lush vocal harmonies and "American Canterbury" sound, reminding me of such other American purveyors of the art such as Happy the Man, Underground Railroad and even French TV.
The sound that's uniquely their own takes the form of an epic rock song a la early Yes or Genesis, but with wicked and sophisticated polyrhythms and chord changes that are so demented as to be actually harmful to the unprepared ear, alternating with uplifting, almost naively optimistic ten-minute jams.
All four members (bass, organ/piano, guitar, drums) are great soloists, and the music reflects their love of improvisation by weaving together very intricate lines, and also allowing for constant experimentation on everyone's part.
