  Mika Waltari
Waltari was born in Helsinki and lost his father, a Lutheran pastor, at the age of 5.
Waltari also scripted the popular cartoon Kieku ja Kaiku and wrote a guidebook for aspiring writers that influenced many younger writers such as Kalle Päätalo.
Waltari wrote seven more historical novels, placed in various ancient cultures, among which The Dark Angel, set in the Byzantine Empire, is probably the best.

Re: Hellenic Society/Byzantine Literature A couple of footnotes on Byzantine novels: The Waltari novel (one of the gratest historical novels) was translated into elegant English by Naomi Walford under the title "The Dark Angel" (NY 1953).
Waltari prepared for it by finding his inspiration through daily contemplation of his reproduction of Benozzo Gozzoli's fresco in Florence, which inludes portraits of John VIII and Patriarch Joseph.
After Waltari's death his various drafts for this novel were discovered; they were published as the preliminary to the Dark Angel.

My all-time-favourite is "The Dark Angel" (Johannes Angelos), that is set on last days of Constantinople during Turkish conquest in 1452.
Waltari's books are not so difficult to find in used book stores.
