Dark elves are my favorite race in all the fantasy settings, and to have books such as these not only focus on one who rejects the society, but goes so indepth as to describe the society in pinpoint detail is quite a treat.
Because this is principally a linking novel that connects Drizzt's life in the underdark with his later adventures with his companions, it is the weakest of the trilogy.

At first we both wanted to create The Dark Elf trilogy into movies, or pitch the idea, however we knew nobody would go for it, Icewind Dale is much better for audience which is not familiar with the books.
However The Dark Elf trilogy could definitely be made into 1 epic, and still have amazing character depth and of course action sequences which are plenty.
I think the fact that the whole Dark Elf saga is foreign to viewers would work to the filmmaker's advantage.

So I decided to read the 'The Dark Elf Triology.' After the first page I became addicted the to the book and couldn't put it down.
This is a great trilogy, leading on from the Icewind Dale trilogy R.A.Salvatore introduces us to Drizzt Do'Urdens dark past and the vast caverns of the underdark.
The trilogy gives us great characters and great places and most of all it shows why Drizzt is how he is in the Icewind Dale trilogy and why he hates Artemis Entreri with such passion!

In retrospect, despite the slow pace of the first half of Fellowship, I think it was important in settng up who the hobbits are (as is mentioned later in this thread) because it gave greater weight to their actions later in the story.
I was totally enthralled with the cultures and plotline of the books and devoured the trilogy in a week, but I was totally frustrated by the narrative pacing and character development.
If you read the trilogy with an eye for the background, you'll note that Galadriel, as a member of the Council of the Wise, has been thinking about the One Ring, in some capacity, for literally hundreds of years.

In the film The Fellowship of the Ring, you have Arwen filling the role of the Elf lord Glorfindel who meets the Hobbits and Aragorn on the road and aids them in their journey to Rivendell.
I don't give particular attention to the performances by the actors in the Fellowship, because Tolkien's universe, as I stated, is populated by characters that have a strong role as symbols and icons but very little inner life, and the dialogue is either informative to the reader or otherwise didactic in purpose.
These three rings were made by Celebrimbor (an Elf out of history, not part of the trilogy storyline) for the Elves, who was deceived by Sauron and tricked into helping him forge the other Rings of Power.
