The Dark Frontier - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Based on the development in weaponry of the year 1936, The Dark Frontier was one of the first novels to predict the invention of a nuclear bomb and its consequences.
The one copy that has survived is Countess Schverzinski's, and she is driving her Mercedes at breakneck speed along a dark and narrow mountain road, with the only intention of fleeing the country.
Critics as well as Ambler fans (and the author himself in an Introduction to the novel) have pointed out that The Dark Frontier was meant to be a parody of the brand of adventure thriller Ambler enjoyed as an adolescent but came to find rather silly when he reached adulthood.

As the author explains in the introduction, The Dark Frontier was meant to be a parody of the brand of adventure thriller he enjoyed as an adolescent but came to find rather silly when he reached adulthood.
The Dark Frontier is the debut novel of Eric Ambler, who contributed so much to the espionage and crime genres through such marvelous books as Background to Danger, Epitaph for a Spy, Cause for Alarm, A Coffin for Dimitrios, and Journey into Fear.
Incidentally, although The Dark Frontier was written in the early 1930s, it involves the invention of a nuclear bomb -- one of the very first (if not the first) novels on this subject.

Dartmouth News - The next frontier for cosmologists: dark energy - 05/04/01
Dark energy has its most direct effect on the cosmos through the rate of expansion, so measuring astrophysical phenomena like supernovae or the abundance of galaxies at different points along deep probes of space should reveal information about the evolution of the universe.
Unless the dark energy really is constant, and Caldwell doesn't think so, theorists expect to find wiggles and lumps in the distribution of the dark energy, which in turn influence both the distribution of galaxies and the temperature patterns of the cosmic microwave background (CMB).
There might be a slight time- or spatially-dependent drift in the force of attraction between two masses or two charges, which may be connected to the rate of change in the dark energy density.

Salon Dark Hotel | History of the Dark Hotel
The Dark Hotel was built in 1893 on San Francisco's Jackson Street, at the place where three of the city's more disreputable neighborhoods -- Chinatown, the Barbary Coast and North Beach -- meet.
Out of the dark!" Whatever the case, it is certainly true that the Hotel was an early home for many of the great minstrels who played San Francisco.
The Dark Hotel was born in an age when San Francisco was still the farthest-flung outpost of the wide-open criminal frontier that made up the American West.

As Richard Ellis says: "Although theorists have predicted the form of dark matter in galaxy clusters from numerical simulations based on the effects of gravity alone, this is the first time we have convincing observations to back them up.
For example, they found concentrations of dark matter associated with galaxies known to be slowly falling into the system.

Spaceflight Now | Breaking News | Mapping the 'Cosmic Web' of dark matter
The method used by Taylor, a PPARC Advanced Fellow, Dr. Meghan Gray, then a student at the Institute of Astronomy in Cambridge, and co-workers in Heidelberg and Imperial College London, is to take advantage of gravitational lensing, when light from a distant galaxy is bent by the gravitational field of matter in front of it.
Their image of the Dark Matter, which covers an area of sky the size of the full Moon, was obtained by analysing the gravitationally lensed images of 50,000 galaxies.
The existence of these filaments has long been a prediction of the theory of Dark Matter in the Universe, which indicated that the matter in the Universe is distributed in an intricate network of clumps and filaments - the so-called Cosmic Web.

 The Dark Child
The Dark Child is Camara Laye's autobiography, tracing the development of his cultural and personal values as a young man coming of age within the Malinke tribe of Upper Guinea during the 1930's.
Menchu's book is more an autoethnography, and from the cultural examples she chooses to include, it acts more as resistance literature where she attempts to expose the heinous treatment of her people by the Guatemalan government, in hopes that the injustice suffered will not be continually repeated in future generations.
The Dark Child's motive is not so ominous as it chronicles the "ancient ritualistic society of the Malinke," in an attempt to keep this history alive and portray its role in giving shape to the consciousness of its sons (Laye, back cover).

CNN - Thriller writer Eric Ambler dies - October 23, 1998
He served in the Royal Artillery during World War II, rising to the rank of lieutenant-colonel.
The early novels, beginning in 1936 with "The Dark Frontier," were generally set in Eastern Europe and the Levant, and written from a left-wing point of view, which was seen as a conscious reaction to the tradition of John Buchan and others who had written of the glory of the empire from within the Establishment.
Ambler also wrote 16 screenplays, the most noted being the adaptation of Nicholas Monsarrat's novel "The Cruel Sea," for which he received a 1953 Oscar nomination.
