Wired 14.02: The Dark Knight Returns
Bob Kane, who drew the original Dark Knight in 1939, instantly became a celebrity and went on to a film and fine-art career.
Neal Adams, who's credited with rescuing the crusader from the high camp of the 1960s TV series, also reinvented the X-Men before parlaying his work into a successful film career that earned him enough to spend his retirement promoting the theory that Earth is expanding.
America in 2039 is a police state, individual liberties have been curtailed, and there's a dark sense of impending doom.

The Dark Knight Strikes Again - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is a sequel to Miller's The Dark Knight Returns.
DK2 was considered controversial upon its release by some comics fans, as it was considered to be a repudiation of effects that the original Dark Knight Returns had on American superhero comics (the creation of the so-called "grim n' gritty" movement), and a celebration of the surrealist and high-energy eccentricity of the superhero tradition.
The Dark Knight Strikes Again can also be viewed as Miller's satire of the very 'grim and gritty' movement which he helped set into motion with The Dark Knight Returns.

But the writer-producer-director-megamind—who in his spare time runs a film conglomerate that includes the Lucasfilm production outfit, the ILM visual-effects house and Skywalker Sound—says he was always aware of at least one Phantom risk: that Anakin Skywalker, the Jedi knight in training who would evolve into the sinister Darth Vader, was a kid.
After seeing a rough cut of the film and reading the script, we can say that Clones seems poised to get the series back on track—and provide an exhilarating two hours of serious fun.
Clones is populated with hundreds of computer-generated creatures, from new digital stars like the four-armed diner chef Dexter Jettster to familiars like Yoda, Watto the Junkman—and that vexing critter Jar Jar Binks, around whom the disappointment in Phantom Menace crystallized.

The Dark Knight Strikes Again #1 [2001] Shaking Through.net: Comics: Review
Epics of the size and scope of Watchmen just aren't attempted that often, while the influence of Dark Knight is seen everywhere, both within the comics field (out-of-continuity stories such as Kingdom Come) and without (who can doubt its influence on Tim Burton's first Batman film?).
The truth is, of course, that Dark Knight didn't achieve this alone.
When Frank Miller's Batman: The Dark Knight Returns first appeared in the mid-1980s, it seemed to spark a transformation in the superhero comic-book genre practically overnight.

Classic-Horror Review of Demon Knight (1996)
The titular knight both refers to a literal knight-like figure who tries to prevent the demons' bid for universal kingship and is a pun on "night." Both "Demon Knight" and "Demon Night" are titles literally suiting the film.
Rather, this is a gritty, claustrophobic film that knows how to frighten and take you on a wild roller coaster ride through a dark and dingy boarding house containing outcasts with attitudes as well as present an alternate history of the universe.
I'm not about to argue that Demon Knight should have swept the 1996 Oscars (although I'd like that in an ideal world), but you can't ask for a much more entertaining and satisfying horror film cum amusement park ride.

That the Batmobile (here call the Tumbler) is an amazing, awe-inspiring machine, bringing to mind the towering majesty of Batman’s unstoppable tank in Frank Miller’s graphic novel The Dark Knight Returns.

Amazon.com: The Batman Legacy (Four Film Giftset) (1992): DVD
This first film was revolutionary in it's tone and delivery when first released, and it hasn't aged very well, but the page it takes out of Frank Miller's classic Dark Knight Returns helps seperate it from the campy television series, which is why it became the blockbuster it did.
This film was a split between critics and fans alike, as the dark tone is pretty much gone and replaced by an uber-campiness, but it's nowhere near as bad as what would follow it.
Compiling the first four Batman films, which as a previous reviewer noted both helped resurrect comic to film adaptations and nearly kill them as well, the Batman Anthology is better left on the shelf and the Special Editions of the first two films are the only ones worth purchasing.

Wimbledon’s biggest flaw is that it really never makes the audience yearn to see these the characters fall in love.
