The Dark Tower is a fantasy fiction, science fantasy, horror, and western themed series of novels by the American writer Stephen King.

The Dark Tower (2004 novel) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Dark Tower is the seventh and final book of novelist Stephen King's Dark Tower series, published September 21, 2004 (King's birthday) by Donald M. Grant Publishers, and illustrated by Michael Whelan.
Fans worldwide, concerned that King would never finish the series, especially after the author was nearly killed in 1999, breathed a collective sigh of relief at the long awaited completion of the epic story that took King more than thirty years to write.
If the reader does not heed the warning, the story resumes with Roland climbing to the top of the Dark Tower, and as he opens the final door, to his horror, he realizes he has reached the Tower countless times before.

The SF Site Featured Review: The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger
The story begins "the man in fl fled across the desert and the gunslinger followed," and proceeds to tell us the tale of Roland of Gilead, the world's last gunslinger, and his quest of quests to find the Dark Tower and set whatever is wrong with his world, perhaps all worlds, right.
Roland's path to the Tower is through the "man in fl," a magician whom Roland must catch and confront before passing on.
There are elements of dark fantasy, the invocation of spirits (tied to science, the use of drugs to enhance the "speaking" trance), magic, mysticism, and the blasted post-apocalyptic landscape like something out of a frenzied Bosch nightmare.

Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came" is a poem by Robert Browning (1812 - 1889), first published in 1855 in the collection entitled Men and Women.
However, The Song of Roland does not feature a tower or a solitary quest by Roland, and is not clearly related to the Browning poem.

If "Childe Roland to the Dark Tower came" is a rather atypical monologue, the poem also has to be defined as an atypical kind of epic, with the absence of a material object as the necessary origin and fundamental justification for the pilgrimage.
In other words, the speaker of "Childe Roland to the Dark Tower came" is engaged in a motionless, self-oriented, nightmarish, imaginary, and aesthetic journey whose detours are the detours of poetic creation, and not the geographical detours of a daring traveller embarked in a perilous journey.
In spite of the apparently epic dimension of the poem, "Childe Roland to the Dark Tower came" is not a narrative.

Susannah, in the meantime, has a darkness growing within her that she only dimly senses, an evil that is tended to by Mia, yet another personality, and this one perhaps is the most deadly and dangerous of them all.
The tale of The Dark Tower requires substantial investments both materially and temporally; it is understandable, in a sense, why the volumes comprising this tale tend to be less read than King's other works.
Taken on their own, however, The Dark Tower volumes and WOLVES OF CALLA are spellbinding in their own right for the way that King has constructed this other world that may or may not be our own down to the last nuance.

 The Dark Tower's Architecture
For Stephen King's legions of loyal fans, the fits-and-starts publication of the Dark Tower saga has been nearly as exhilarating and frustrating as Roland of Gilead's epic quest itself.
Which makes the publication of Dark Tower IV "Wizard and Glass" an excellent opportunity to reflect on the architecture of this mind-boggling literary edifice King is constructing.
King used Browning's poem "Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came" as the primary springboard for the series, but the books contain a multitude of other references to literature and pop culture.

But for all its archetypal echoes and textual interplay, Wizard and Glass is above all an especially inspired continuation of Roland and his fellow pilgrims' progress (or lack thereof) toward the elusive Dark Tower.
Along the way, King peppers his narrative with loaded references and tie-ins to many of his other novels outside the Dark Tower cycle—including The Stand, The Talisman, Eyes of the Dragon, and Insomnia.

With the full cooperation of Stephen King himself, The Road to the Dark Tower examines the epic journey of the author, a quest that undoubtedly mirrors Roland's, to complete a story that threatened to overwhelm him.
Not so with Vincent's The Road to the Dark Tower, the first full-length study of King's 30-year opus, a book-by-book summary with explanations and commentary.
While THE ROAD TO THE DARK TOWER will not be the last word on Roland's quest and the Stephen King Universe, it will undoubtedly be the standard by which all future works on the subject will be judged.

The SF Site Featured Review: The Dark Tower: The Dark Tower
Bracing his career like a metaphoric linchpin is The Dark Tower cycle, described by some as his "magnum opus," a capstone literary piece de resistance.
The triumph of The Dark Tower is the way its narrative connects with the reader at a level that transcends the superficiality of intellectual pomp, the narrative flaccidity of loud apocalyptic battles, and the artificial grandness of god-like characters.
The Dark Tower cycle is on the one hand a "single novel," to quote King's view on the matter, but it is also a sort of justification for everything else here referred to that King has written.

At one point in this final book of the Dark Tower series, the character Stephen King (added to the plot in Song of Susannah) looks back at the preceding pages and says "when this last book is published, the readers are going to be just wild." And he's not kidding.
The tension in the Dark Tower series has built steadily from the beginning and, like in the best of King's novels, explodes into a violent, heart-tugging climax as Roland and his ka-tet finally near their goal.
I understand there are thematic and dramatic reasons for Roland coming to the tower alone, however the deaths of 3 of the ka-tet are inexcusable, overly-manipulative and pointless deaths to seemingly provoke an emotional response.
