The most obvious evidence of mining to the casual visitor to Dartmoor are the remains of the old mine-house at Wheal Betsy which is alongside of the A386 between Tavistock and Okehampton.

 The Legendary Dartmoor Powder Mills
Only wooden and copper handed tools were used and all the workers that were involved in the mixing process had to wear leather aprons and soft soled boots.
One worker at the mills was Silas Sleep and each day he would eat his packed breakfast and dinner at the same time because if he got blown up he would go to his maker fully replenished.
There also is an old story that some of the workers in the more volatile areas of the mill were provided with one legged stools to sit on.

In 1863 he went for a short coastal voyage to Wales, and gained a liking for the sea; and in 1864 he joined a vessel bound for Canada, and had a narrow escape, nearly being crushed by an iceberg during the night.
He is now considered one of the best authorities on Dartmoor and its antiquities, having made it the subject of his life's work.
He was one of the earliest members of the Dartmoor Preservation Association, joining it immediately on its formation.

One 17-year-old boy and one rescue worker were airlifted to hospital in Devon with ankle injuries, while a 17-year-old girl was treated for mild hypothermia.
Police, ambulance crews, military personnel and the Dartmoor Rescue Group mounted a joint rescue operation on Tuesday afternoon after receiving a phone call to say the group was in trouble at Rough Tor.
The injured boy and rescue worker were taken by air ambulance to the North Devon District Hospital, where the boy remains.
