  'The Dead' (PG)
The movie begins with a shot of the Morkans' town house in Dublin as the guests bustle out of the snow and into the foyer.
This is a movie of exquisite, overwhelmingly passionate moments, but Anjelica Huston pours such emotion into this story that her lines seem like a scraping away of the soul; it's almost unendurably painful.
What we see in Huston's direction of "The Dead" is an artist working out of the core of his talent, cleanly and without uncertainty, and bringing to bear the accumulated experience of a long career.

The Dead is the name adopted by American rock band the Grateful Dead after the death of Jerry Garcia.
"The Dead" was a short story by James Joyce, from his book Dubliners.

Evil Dead II: Dead By Dawn - Book of The Dead Limited Edition (1987)
As such, I spent much of Dead II confused about events; I knew Ash was involved in the first movie and I couldn't figure out why he'd return to the same place where all of those horrible events occurred.
Perhaps because Dead II seems to assume that you've already seen the first movie - weak recap aside - I found the characters to be weak and ill-defined.
Evil Dead II will never be a particularly attractive film, but this new transfer moderately topped the prior one.

The Evil Dead: Book of the Dead Edition (1982)
I can recall the fuss about Dead’s carnage and still think it was a tremendous overreaction; there were a lot of really sick horror flicks during that era, but Dead bears more in common with “Itchy and Scratchy” than it does those other films.
Much of this revolves around the movie’s crude effects and all of the nastiness to which the actors were subjected, but he keeps up an entertaining attitude.
Dead fans may feel disappointed since Fanalysis offers no real discussion of that film; its relationship to the flick is tangential.

It is a rare treasure, this movie and I cannot write enough praise for it.
Lady Gregory's poem recited in the movie is one of the most moving ever written.
If you want your movies action and plot packed avoid this, there really is no beginning, middle or end just a lens onto the characters at a dinner party in Dublin 80 years ago and all the little nuances and shadings of the personalities portrayed so beautifully.

Joyce - Bergen review of "James Joyce's The Dead"
Just as the musical, which opened Thursday night at Playwrights Horizons, is about the impact of the dead on the living, you watch the show aware of its ghosts.
The stage production of "The Dead" -- the most anticipated show of the off-Broadway season -- isn't in the same league as either of its predecessors, lacking the power and poetry of the story and the enveloping atmosphere of the film.
The pre-opening excitement stirred by "The Dead" -- which has a book by Richard Nelson, music by Irish composer Shaun Davey, and lyrics by both -- is probably more a result of its glittery cast than its past.

The result was a movie that, from that point on, turned the horror genre on its ear.
There are also all the TV spots and theatrical trailers, audio of radio spots promoting the movie, a biography of director Romero, a gallery of posters and print ads (interesting), and a comic book preview.
It's a movie that has spawned countless imitations over the last 25 years (including some pretty blatant Italian knockoffs) and, like its '68 predecessor, has helped reinvent the zombie genre.

'Evil Dead II' was less a sequel and more a remake - made with a larger budget and what Campbell himself referred to as 'splatstick' humor, it referenced the Three Stooges whilst still maintaining the gore level of the original.
Looking at 'Army of Darkness' it's hard to imagine it even relates to the original at all - 'Evil Dead' is a serious (to some extent) horror film whereas 'Army of Darkness' involves time-traveling and the concept of having a chainsaw for a hand.
That's not to discredit the sequels ('Evil Dead II' is almost as good as this) but if I could only pick one, I'd go for the first - and best - of the bunch.

EVIL DEAD 2: Dead By Dawn is ultimately more a campy, funny, and scarier re-make of the first film (although it is a sequel, it's more a reinvisioning of the first film with better elements).
DEAD BY DAWN is the ultimate follow-up to a cult favorite, and the third and final installment of the series would very much end the series on a campy note.
The Evil Dead was a low-budget classic of frightening, gory horror, and while there are certainly some very funny moments of extremely fl humor (it somehow manages to make a man decapitating his girlfriend with a shovel seem hilarious), it was a rather intense and horrifying ride.

Evil Dead II - Movie Tome
A misunderstood sequel to the first Evil Dead, many fans believe it is a remake-- this is understandable since what little back story there is mentions nothing about the original group of 'campers' from the first movie.
This was made neccesary due to legal issues, so that said, and also ignoring the fact that technically Ash died at the end of the first movie, on to the synopsis.
An excellent movie for those in search of a light hearted gore fest not heavy on plot or continuity, rife with Campbell's infamous one liners and 'splatstick' comedy.

Ash (Campbell), the apparent sole survivor of "The Evil Dead" - and presumably with no recollection of the first film - heads back to the dingy cabin in the woods for a romantic break with his girlfriend (Bixler).
In the ensuing chaos, "Evil Dead II" soon forgets the confines of horror, and whirls off into a strange, almost hallucinogenic cartoon nightmare of flying eyeballs, bleeding walls, and possessed limbs.
A hugely influential film, "Evil Dead II" had producers and directors across the film-making world glued to their seats.

Most of it takes place at a holiday party thrown each year by the Misses Morkan, two elderly music teachers and their spinsterish niece, at which the guests dance and sing and eat and drink to excess.
And the plot, such as it is, turns on a scrap of song that triggers a memory of passionate love and forever changes the lives of Gabriel Conroy, the story’s main character, and his wife Gretta.
Weirdly distracted and disconnected in the early scenes, he seems downright menacing and on the verge of violence in the final tableau.

Evil Dead II is not so much a sequel as a remake of the original The Evil Dead (1983).
Since Raimi had already planned to do Army of Darkness (then known as "Medieval Dead") as the REAL sequel, and he knew that it would cost more money than he had, he simply remade his first movie.

Movie Review - Shaun of the Dead - eFilmCritic
Because it’s such a conventional type of film to make, any type of innovation is personally accepted with great enthusiasm, like last year’s “28 Days Later” and now with “Shaun of the Dead.” This movie is all at once a hilarious spoof of, an affectionate dedication to and excellent new milestone in the zombie genre.
Many tried-and-true zombie formulas are found in “Shaun of the Dead”, however when they pop-up in the movie’s story they seem very authentic, not like typical rehashing.
There are requisite scenes of characters being bitten and trying to hide the inevitable from the other survivors, the creators- Edgar Wright directed and co-wrote the script with Pegg- follow the rules of the genre not because of a lack of creativity, they are simply having fun with the conventions.
