Mode of Death From Congestive Heart Failure
Congestive heart failure (HF) is primarily a disease of the elderly.
In a multivariable analysis that excluded patients who did not have a known mode of death, the significant predictors of progressive or metabolic (nonarrhythmic) death were the use of inotrope (odds ratio [OR] 15.6, 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.9-83.3) and the presence of preexisting chronic renal failure (OR 8.0, 95% CI 1.4-45.1).
We believe that prospective identification and/or stratification of HF patients at risk for metabolic death, and a greater understanding of the natural history of metabolic impairment, are key elements in choosing appropriate levels of care for those at or near the end-of-life.

Heart Attack - Texas Heart Institute Heart Information Center
For some people, a heart attack feels like a burning sensation, similar to indigestion or heartburn, and the pain may be in only a small area of the chest.
The goals of heart attack treatment are to return blood flow to your heart muscle, bring back a regular heartbeat, and give your heart time to recover.
Heart attack patients may also receive aspirin and blood-thinning medicines (anticoagulants) to stop clots from forming or growing in size.

Patients who had survived a first heart attack and were taking any NSAID were more likely to die than those who had survived one heart attack and were not taking NSAIDs.
Death rates were highest among those taking cox-2 drugs and high doses of traditional NSAIDs.
Compared to patients not taking any of these drugs, the risk of death was two to three times higher for patients taking low-dose (25 milligrams or less a day) of Vioxx (rofecoxib) or 200 milligrams or less a day of Celebrex (celecoxib).

The Death of the Heart by Elizabeth Bowen : Booksamillion.com (0385720173, Paperback)
While her novels masquerade as witty comedies of manners, set in the lavish country houses of the Anglo-Irish or in elegant London homes, they mine the depths of private tragedy with a subtle ferocity and psychological complexity reminiscent of Henry James.
The Death of the Heart, a story of adolescent love and the betrayal of innocence, is perhaps Bowen's best-known book.
When sixteen-year-old Portia, recently orphaned, arrives in London and falls for an attractive cad--a seemingly carefree young man who is as much an outsider in the sophisticated and politely treacherous world of 1930s drawing rooms as she is--their collision threatens to shatter the carefully built illusions of everyone around them.
