  The Assisi Decalogue
Today my thoughts turn spontaneously to those responsible for the social and political life of the countries that were represented there by the religious authorities of many nations.
The inspired reflections of these men and women, representatives of different religious confessions, their sincere desire to work for peace, and their common quest for the true progress of the whole human family, found a sublime and yet concrete form in the "Decalogue" proclaimed at the end of this exceptional day.
I have the honour of presenting to Your Excellency the text of this common agreement, convinced that these ten propositions can inspire the political and social action of your government.

The Decalogue must be considered, on the basis of the Mosaic authorship of the Pentateuch, to have been fundamental; and as such its wording must have been so accurately fixed as to preclude the possibility of latitude for scribal caprice.
Upon these considerations, Kuenen, Wellhausen, Stade, Schultz, and Smend have argued against the ascription of any decalogue to Mosaic times; but with the omission from the original ten of the injunction against idolatry, the mainstay is taken from under the opposition to the authenticity of the tradition connecting Moses with such a lapidary code.

Bridging these two "phases" of film making is the multi-part Decalogue, which, taken as a whole, may be the most meaningful of all that Kieslowski has brought to the screen.
Decalogue was initially produced as a series of ten 1-hour films for Polish television.
Decalogue 1 is crafted as an admonition to those who blindly follow any philosophy, be it religious or secular, and Kieslowski's ability to make these characters believable and sympathetic drives home the message.

Ten Commandments - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Ten Commandments, or Decalogue, is a list of religious and moral imperatives which, according to the Bible, was spoken by God to Moses on Mount Sinai and engraved on two stone tablets.
The name decalogue is derived from the Greek name δέκα λόγοι or dekalogoi ("Ten Speeches") found in the Septuagint, which is the Greek translation of the Hebrew name.
The verses which follow the Decalogue in Exodus and in Deuteronomy are a direct continuation of the Revelation, containing additional commandments that God gave to Moses.

Decalogue 2 - "Thou shalt not take the Lord's name in vain" - A woman forces a doctor to make a harrowing choice: If her husband lives, she'll get an abortion of the child she's carrying from another man. Somewhat roundabout on the whole.
Decalogue 7 - "Thou shalt not steal" - This very slow entry has a child's mother kidnapping her from the child's grandmother, whom the kid thinks is her real mom.
Decalogue 8 - "Thou shalt not bear false witness" - Kieslowski invokes the Holocaust, with the tale of an American woman who returns to Poland to face a famed lecturer, only to reveal that as a young girl, the lecturer turned her away from a hiding place from the Nazis during WWII.

Evidently this is the reason why the decalogue was given as it was, and not because it was a perfect and eternal law in and of itself.
That the decalogue was merely the national law for the Jews and temporal in its obligation, is proved by the fact that stoning to death was the penalty for its violation.
The decalogue alone is never called the law of God, nor the law of the Lord, nor a perfect law, nor is it said that any one will be judged by it, or that it is binding on Christians.

 Krzysztof Kieslowski
Defined as Kieslowski's experimental, transitional work for Polish television, Decalogue is, in itself, a monumental achievement: a remarkable examination of moral tale colliding, and often yielding, against the bounds of human frailty.
Invariably, Decalogue proves to be a testament for the venerable director as well, a profound observation on the trials and tribulations of everyday life, reflected in complex ways - direct and abstruse - but all fundamentally, and infallibly, human.
In the haunting final sequence that markedly diverges from the resigned and disaffected conclusion of Decalogue VI, Magda is able to look through a metaphoric window into her own calloused, world-weary soul, and is provided with a glimpse of humanity that still remains intact.

Review of In Defense of the Decalogue
In Defense of the Decalogue is not just "another book" or even just "another book in the on-going discussion on law and grace." Barcellos has laid down the gauntlet and issued a specific and detailed list of challenges to any and all who reject the Covenant Theology that he, and Founders Ministries, espouse.
The key words in that sentence are "the perpetuity of the Decalogue." Barcellos equates the perpetuity of the Decalogue with the perpetuity of the so-called moral law.
He insists on calling the Decalogue the "moral law," with no textual evidence, and he never calls it the "tables of the covenant," despite the fact the Holy Spirit does.

 Chicago Reader Movie Review
All of the films in The Decalogue are easy and pleasurable to follow as stories, yet part of the excitement they generate stems from discussions about their meaning after their dramatic impact registers.
The Decalogue harks back to a notion of conceptual art movie that reeks of the 60s--specifically, zeitgeist filmmakers like Antonioni, Godard, and occasionally Resnais--even though it's exploring everyday urban life in the late 80s.
Above all The Decalogue is a packaging idea, successfully designed to give Kieslowski an international reputation and made in part for export--which is why, by his own admission, Polish politics, queues in front of shops, and ration cards were all pointedly excluded and the all-purpose symbolic "silent witness" was slipped in as an afterthought.
