This movie was written and directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini, who’s mostly remembered today for ‘Saló’, if he’s remembered at all.
In any case, ‘The Decameron’ is based on Boccaccio’s book of the same name (which I haven’t read), and the plot is sort of useless to describe; the movie comprises bunch of different vignettes and follows various people who sleep with each other and do harm to others and make others laugh and what-have-you.
The movie is worth watching, though, but be ready for something that might not be for all tastes.

I remember buying a copy of Boccaccio's The Decameron way back when at a used bookstore in Houston as I'd heard it was The Canterbury Tales-lite and started reading it soon thereafter.
Most of the adaptations, however, have focused on the sexual aspects, so De Laurentiis is more than likely going to be one of the first straight-ahead adaptations that tries to cover all the stories under one film.

After researching all the praise The Decameron has received, this appears to be another one of those movies that suffers from insider-syndrome - a film that is only good because everyone else says it is.
There are snatches of nudity and some of the subject matter may be a little alarming, but this is far from being controversial, or daring.

The film is fl-sheep kin to the director's amateur-theatrical take on Scripture, The Gospel According to St. Matthew (1964); both films abound in earthy settings framing vivid faces that might have gazed out of a Renaissance painting.

Lusty nuns who perform sexual "miracles," a cheating wife with a head for business, a dying con artist attempting a heavenly smile, young lovers caught with their pants down, a servant who loses his head for love and a gullible farmer who tries to turn his wife into a mare.
An entry in Pasolini's canon of bringing the bawdy classics to cinema (see ARABIAN NIGHTS, SALO), THE DECAMERON based on the tales of Boccaccio seems dated even in the telling, artier than the early-70s sex romps it inspired, but not altogether thrilling.
The director himself is a nice touch as Giotto, and I'm rather haunted by the line, "Why bother to create art when dreaming about it is so much better?" Still, there's a nice balance of crudity and beauty, bawdy humor and religious satire.

For his adaptation of The Decameron, Pasolini tells ten stories of Neopolitan peasant life, taking roughly one story from each of the ten sections of the book.
Rather than using the device of the storytellers (who, in Boccaccio, spend ten days in seclusion while waiting out the plague), the film presents the stories in two parts, with each part structured around one story that frames the others.
