The Decemberists - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Decemberists are a five-piece indie pop band from Portland, Oregon, fronted by singer/songwriter Colin Meloy.
Named both in reference to the Russian Decembrist Revolt and the atmosphere associated with the month of December[1], the Decemberists write songs that range from upbeat pop to instrumentally lush ballads, and often employ instruments like the accordion and upright bass.
On their website, The Decemberists claim that their official drink is Orangina, and that bands they "adore" include Norfolk and Western, The Places, The Long Winters, Death Cab for Cutie, Tracker, Sleater-Kinney, Electrelane, Camera Obscura, Clearlake, Tom Heinl, The Thermals, The Swords Project, and Earlimart.

In March 2005, the Decemberists were reportedly the first band to distribute a music video via BitTorrent [2] -- the self-produced 16 Military Wives (for the song of the same name from Picaresque).
The Decemberists do an exceptional job of fusing their delightful lush sound with the strength of the heavier elements in "The Tain." It was a perfect end to a more than satisfying set.

While The Decemberists' Picaresque lacks a central character, the songs themselves are largely told in the first person by the protagonist or an observer.
The Decemberists recorded the album in a former Baptist church in Portland, Oregon with producer Chris Walla (guitarist/keyboardist of Death Cab for Cutie).
The Decemberist's latest release tells a number of different stories, but the focus is always on the narrator.

Of or relating to a genre of usually satiric prose fiction originating in Spain and depicting in realistic, often humorous detail the adventures of a roguish hero of low social degree living by his or her wits in a corrupt society.
This is a band that's firmly rooted in the tradition of telling stories with their lyrics, which is quite frankly a welcome break from a lot of the music that's around today.
I've already said that The Decemberists draw heavily on sea shantys and naval songs as influences, and it doesn't take a genius to see that the title of this song implies that influence particularly strongly.

In short, they're the band that was waiting for Burlesque to happen, and in Koko they've found their spiritual home, a crimson and gold Victoriana music hall with boxes and bars and an audience waiting to be entertained.
From there it's on to This Soldering Life, from 2003's Her Majesty The Decemberists, a tender trenches love song from the only band in the world who have ever made beautiful music out of Corporal Bradley of regiment five, bathing soldiers and stevedores.
And if that wasn't enough, he ends the show by getting the audience to all sit down as he hypnotises the band to sleep one by one, only so that we can all rise again as the band play us out.

Which, it seems, was just the punch that the Decemberists needed in their prior albums, taking their music from good to really, really good.
One of the quibbles I always had with the Decemberists was Colin Meloy's voice -- it's nasal and a bit thin, a bit reminiscent of Jeff Mangum.

The Decemberists: Her Majesty the Decemberists - PopMatters Music Review
An important detail about Her Majesty the Decemberists -- and one I'm venturing you won't read about in many other reviews of the album -- is that there's a lyric sheet inside.
Still, Her Majesty the Decemberists is distinctive, where the good parts are so good that it's easy to overlook the not-so-good.
And if Her Majesty is that strange, delicious crop, the Decemberists themselves are the bearing tree, well beyond a sapling but still not fully grown.

John Moen demonstrated his ability to juggle with two things and even managed to make that seem impressive, while Jenny Conlee’s inability to throw a tambourine across the stage with accuracy only made her all the more endearing.
The Oxford Decemberist audience was a bit older than I was expecting, with a lot of people in their mid-thirties — the sort of people that get articles written in the Guardian about them, after they spend £50 a week on new CDs and wear designer jeans despite being, technically, old people.
What *is* unfortunate is when the American teenage hipster crowd does begin to embrace this sort of band, and the crippling effect it has on the music.

We swooned and sighed as Meloy played a lengthy set of Decemberists favorites and Morrissey covers, interspersed with jocular banter and references to his girlfriend (grrr!)—the illustrator Carson Ellis, who is responsible for the band's whimsical album artwork.
The Decemberists' fantastic new album, appropriately titled Picaresque, begins with the lines, "Here she comes in her palanquin/On the back of an elephant," and sails away from there.
Meloy inhabits the bodies of a teenage prostitute ("On the Bus Mall"), a government worker in love with a spy ("The Bagman's Gambit"), a bloodthirsty sailor ("The Mariner's Revenge Song"), and a disgraced athlete ("The Sporting Life"), all with a wink in his eye and a sob in his throat.

I've heard The Decemberists compared to Belle & Sebastian, and although I'm sure B&S fans would enjoy this album, I don't think the comparison really does The Decemberists justice.
The music isn't ironic either, it's sincere, and you can't help but be drawn into their world.
There's certainly a vast number of good, even great, indie pop bands around at the moment (Death Cab for Cutie, the Shins, Neutral Milk Hotel), but I think the Decemberists are in a class of their own, if only because they stick to and enjoy their subject matter so devotedly.
